I might never had heard The Hard Lessons had it not been for their free downloads of B & G sides at their website. Now that I have heard them I may be the last to know how f*cking great they are. Here they're rocking out "Come Back To Me" at the Magic Stick in Detroit - video courtesy of YouTube and CanYouHearMeTv. com.

Grand Rapids gem Lucy Webster performs "Leave" at The Listening Room in 2001. This is one of my favorites from her sophomore release "Keeping My Fingers Crossed". Wicked line-up with Jon Mosher (second guitar) and Charlie Hoades (fretless bass).

| Jill Jack Gettin' It On
Jill Jack is one of my favorite locals and has taken more DMA's than just about anybody around, for what that's worth. She's consistently created top quality country/folk music. Along with guitarist Billy Brandt they've penned quite a few keepers over the last decade. My favorites are all on "The Love Hotel" (you can read a review here)
Here, Jill's performing "Gettin' On In Memphis" (The Elvis Song) which appears on her latest record "The Moon & The Morning After" which you can buy at www.JillJack.com. The video was recorded by Michael Hacala at Memphis Smoke on 05/25/08. Audio recorded and re-mixed by Jason Fisher in Detroit. Post Production by Jason Fisher. | The Wrenfields - Gonna Be Happy
I have many fond memories of The Wrenfields starting way back in 2001 when I first discovered Noreen Novrocki's debut title song "21st Century Pioneer". It had a special something that I believe could only come from a truly free spirit. When she penned "Mother Nature's Girl" for their follow-up I think I wrote something stupid in the review like '...it sounds wandering and pointless...'. Well DUH - what do you expect from free spirit? I take back anything negative I might have said about her because here she sounds like a fresh summer breeze. Still love this Dearborn alt/country band.
We've been done with Seconds for a while now Wrens. So where's our dessert?
This version of "Gonna Be Happy" was recorded at Memphis Smoke in Royal Oak for Motown Music Central, Directed by Ron Bailey Produced by Jessica Boillat and Rodney W. Brown . Views: 377

| Sufjan Stevens w/Wings
The first time I saw Sufjan Stevens on...I think it was Austin City Limits...I was truly blown away. I'd never heard anything like him. And to think this genius came out of Petosky. This isn't the song I first heard (can't remember what song it was) but I picked it because he's wearing the wings! I distinctly remember the wings! Still....amazing song. It's called "For The Widows of Paradise, For The Fatherless In Ypsilanti" and it was on Greetings From Michigan - the first of his planned 50 state-based records (only Michigan and Illinois so far....but so much great music already). You can buy a copy of at Asthmatic Kitty. Views: 354

| Liz Larin on City Beat
City Beat was a local cable show my buddy Distortion Dave Kupczak produced when he still worked for WROK, the local cable access channel in Royal Oak. He had full access to a mobile video truck so it was the perfect excuse to call up all our favorite bands and offer to videotape their performances at 5th Avenue during the day. Liz Larin has always been one of my favorites singers from way back in her Rebel Heels days. Here she performs the song "Real" from The Story Of O-Miz. You can pick up a copy HERE @ Liz's Website
Unfortunately, Royal Oak cut their cable budget and DD lost his gig - and access to the magical video truck - but not before we captured a few choice performances. Views: 384

| South Normal - It's Burt!
This was a commercial that South Normal did for Burt Automotive Group at Frog Island Park in Ypsilanti back in May of 2006. They wrote the jingle and did about a hundred takes. A bunch of us SN fans showed up to play audience extras, throw beach-balls around and scream "It's Burt!". If you watch closely you can see one local notable singing back-up with the band and another leaping off the stage. It was interesting to see how a full-production commercial gets made and exhausting as well. Not their best moment, but certainly memorable. You can read about it and see pictures here. I really miss this incredibly talented band. If you haven't already, buy their music or at least check them out. Views: 387

| Radiocraft at The Token
This performance of "Butterflies" is from Radiocraft's CATCH YOUR DEATH CD Release Party @ The Token Lounge in Westland back on November 21st 2007. I had the distinct privilege of introducing the band that night like I did at the 2001 CD Release of "In Stereo". I don't get out nearly often enough to see this amazing local band, but I'm still SUPERFAN #1 - until they "make it" that is - at which time I'll have to forsake them forever. Right Suze? ; )

| Freddie and The Dreamers (NME-1964)
Don't know what made me think of these guys. They were part of the British invasion of 1964 along with the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Freddie even makes refrence to the Stones in the video.
Now I see where Mike Meyers got some of his moves for Austin Powers. Check out all of those Vox amps and the Guitars. Very cool!

| Black Bottom Collective - LOVE
Black Bottom was an African-American neighborhood near Downtown Detroit where, in the late 40s and 50s, artists like John Lee Hooker helped spawn the local rythm and blues sound. Although firmly rooted in hip hop, BBC does not need loops and samples to establish an authentic R&B groove - they are a timeless live funk band. Leader Khary Turner is also a highly regarded journalist and his literary prowess elevates their lyrics to poetic heights. For my money, they are one of the hippest bands in this or any city Views: 400
