I find it hard to find good music from unsigned bands around here. It's not that I dont think there any good bands around here, it's just that I dont have time or money to go to a lot of shows, and there really isnt any other outlet for music to be heard in this area. My tastes are rather odd as well, so I usually put my energies into my own music. This is kind of funny, seeing as I just today wrote a letter to 89X radio asking them to play less mainstream crap and play more local stuff. Interesting, kisit maybe?

You are right on the money. College radio stations used to be a good source of "alternative" material, but they seem to be playing a lot more of the mainstream stuff too.

Local music in the Metro Detroit area and beyond is the best there is ANYWHERE!
We are fortunate enough to have excellant Punk bands, VERY Heavy Metal acts, gut-wrenching blues....christ, the list is endless!

For example:
Why else would National Acts come into Royal Oak after their shows at DTE or the (awful) Palace to check out the Brothers Groove at Fifth Avenue on Mondays? This has happened to them a hell of a lot more than once!

Ever check out The Reefermen?
Fuckin' Bobby East does a hell of a (what I call) "The Zep Set"! They slide in some SLY and lots of other "forgotten" gems and James Wailin' ain't shy with his harp and vocals....

We have FACE layin' down straight-up, original, no bullshit Rock-N-Roll that's right in yer face. Once at Fifth Avenue the dance floor was rockin' so hard I thought the floor was gonna cave in...........seriously

Broadzilla crosses Joan Jett with the Sex Pistols and a whole lotta other influences that NEVER leave room for a dull moment....Punk/Metal at it's finest!

The Orbitsuns are making me proud to enjoy raunchy twang rock, Vinnie's the Bomb!

The Killbillies have caused other Psychobilly acts to be a hard act to follow when they warm up for others.......

D.O.C. has been doing Hardcore/Hip Hop/Metal/Punk that has delighted me on several trips to the clubs........and I don't even like hip-hop but I love these guys!!!

The Wrenfields leave no shortage of excellant Alt/Country/Rock that has something for everyone to enjoy...............

Thornetta Davis possesses vocal chords from God Him/Herself, not to mention a smokin' band.........

The Howling Diablos have caused my body to sway in a groove without even realizing it......

Caulfield is slamming punk the Old Testament way with witty lyrics that undoubtedly sail above a lot of lemmings heads........

I guess it's time for me to write my ***** book or guide for those of you who can't seem to find a good band to check out because there just is not enough room on this site to inform you of all the great music you are missing out on.
Tell ya what, e-mail me, let me know what "style" you're in search of and I will be more than happy to suggest a list of local bands that you should check out!
