 Communication Can Make You Or Break You by Vince Smith

If there's one constant in the music business, it's that you have to be good with people to get anywhere. You have to talk to agents, managers, club owners, fans, record execs, promoters, and of course your own bandmates, and you need to learn how to be good at communicating in any given situation if you want to achieve success as an artist. Effective communication begins with knowledge. You have to know, or at least SOUND like you know what you're talking about in order to convince the other person or organization that you're worth taking seriously. Click "Read More" below.


The next key element is sometimes the hardest one to acquire - confidence. If deep down, you're not confident in what you're trying to do, then it's going to be very hard for you to instill confidence in those around you. Most of the time, it's not something you can really fake... people can see right through it.

Another key element is flexibility. Be prepared to bend a little and compromise your position to make it beneficial for both sides. Negotiating skills will be especially needed when you are talking to record labels, managers and promoters. There will be a lot of haggling because every deal involves millions of dollars at that point if a band blows up and hits the big time. You will need to really have your wits about you and think on your feet.

Communications in an organization such as The Musician's Guild are vital to it's survival. They make the difference between stagnance and action, between reactive and proactive management. If you can communicate openly, honestly and trust the people you work with implicitly, then you are well on your way to being a great organization. Of all those listed above, I value trust very highly. I know that after a certain amount of time, your associates should be able to trust your judgement and your actions and if they don't, then something is fundamentally wrong with either the relationship or the person that distrusts you. Either way, it will lead to resentment and will harm relations between those people.

Communication is the best tool a musician has for promoting themselves. Email and websites will never be as effective as face to face contact. There is no advertisement that can create as big a buzz as word of mouth. These are just simple facts that if you remember them, they will make you understand how to build a following for yourself and to create success in the music biz.
