Death rockers "Christian Death" make their only U.S. appearance of their "Necro Sexual Tour" in Detroit at The Corktown Tavern. Christian Death are thee founding fathers of American Goth Rock who were coined "One of the top ten goth bands of all time" by Rolling Stone magazine. The band's shocking cover art, lyrics and imagery- not to mention their controversial name-went on to influence Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Type O Negative and many other bands in the genre. VH1 declared "Christian Death take a relentlessly confrontational stand against organized religion and conventional morality, with an appetite for provocation that makes Marilyn Manson look like Stryper".
The group was founded in 1979, by 16 year old vocalist/lyricist Rozz Williams and lead guitarist Rikk Agnew, formerly of The Adolescents. Their 1982 debut album "Only Theatre of Pain" was noted for its dark themes and subject matter at a time when the L.A. hardcore music scene was in full bloom. The band broke up the following year and reconfigured when Williams met Australian guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Valor Kand of their opening group, Pompeii 99. The two bands merged together, continued using the name Christian Death and recorded their second album "Catastrophe Ballet." Kand's influences led them on a more political journey with a darker/metal sound to match and this line-up remains the best known incarnation of the band. Their 1988 release "Sex, Drugs & Jesus Christ" was a turning point for the band due to its cover art and their full frontal attack against the church. The band was confronted by protesters, riots and bomb threats on their tour. After many line-up changes, musical differences, naming rights and the suicide of original founder Williams in 1998, the band carried on with Valor Kand taking the helm and he continues Christian Death to this day. This tour for their latest album "American Inquistition" has them making their only U.S. club appearance in Detroit before heading down under to New Zealand and Australia for the rest of the summer.
