This video game has become the hot ticket "Tickle Me Elmo" of the 2007 Christmas season... You can't swing a dead cat in Best Buy without knocking down a box of it...
You buy this guitar-looking interface device, which has five big colored buttons where the cowboy chord area is on the "fretboard". You plug it in, and these button combinations come at you on the screen like travelling on a road, and you are expected to push the buttons shown in a timely fashion as some song plays. That's the bottom third of the screen; The top part shows some fantasy arena stage of lights and some other-worldly exaggerated goth figure guy playing the guitar. There are various songs to play, like ZZ Top's "Gimme All Your Lovin'", the Foo Fighter's "Monkey Wrench" and others.
One coffee shop in my area has started a Guitar Hero Night, where kids bring their axes, and plug into this big screen TV and go. They then take turns doing it. Weeeee...
On one hand, I guess it's nice that the guitar is getting a little pedistalling these days, since much of pop music isn't emphasizing the guitar as much as it once did.
On the other hand, something about it makes me want to tactlessly say that these kids instead should put away this poser shit and get down with the REAL DEAL!...

I agree with you. It bothers me a lot. Our drummer’s daughter sat in on a practice and was really blown away that we had learned a song from Guitar Hero. (War Pigs) Read our MySpace blog that pertains to an experience I had in a Best Buy a little more that a year ago when I heard War Pigs.
This is something I found that was cool. Guitar Center not only is selling Guitar Hero but they are also selling the note-for-note song book with many of the songs from Guitar Hero. Play the game for fun and learn the song when you're up to it.
It may be that the instant gratification provided by Guitar Hero™ is eliminating a lot of instrument sales for people who are only casually interested in learning the guitar.
On the other hand, the need for self-expression will never be satisfied by a video game.
In any case, I just bought one for my daughter! Unfortunately she hasn't stuck to the cheap guitar I bought her last year.

If people appreciate real live guitar it is all good, but if people stop going to see live music to play pretend with the TV, bad very bad.

My daughter kicked my ass on Guitar Hero III - right out of the box.

That's how real band practice works. We plan on 4 hours but wind up playing for 6 or 8.
