I would like to post different things from our band such as music, pictures and video in this thread. Would that be considered appropriate? Also would we have to suffer through any kind of degrading comments that are prevalent on other message boards.
This is a shameless desire to self promote in a public forum. But where else can one do it that matters in any way?
I've learned some time ago that if you really, really want do music in any kind of professional capacity at all, you're going to have to "get in bed with" promotion. There's just no way around it.
This has been hard for me to accept, since I personally hate promotion in just about every form it takes: Junk mail, TV commercials, billboards, spam, telemarketers, etc. Also, when done in a solo act capacity (as in my case), it looks remarkably like being egotistical and boastful, which are not personality traits I really believe I have, nor really admire when I see it in others.
But, unless you want to contract this kind of thing out (and who has the extra money for THAT, doing this?), you're pretty much going to have to get used to the idea or peddling yourself. I get all that now.
It's not so bad, really, and you do get used to it. If you think about it from a business capitalist standpoint, selling one's self is actually very, well, AMERICAN!...
And I do fiercely believe in my product (my performed music), which drives this, making it easier. What I suppose I don't like about most promotion is that it is COMPLETELY profit driven, but with what I promote, it goes a lot deeper and is more complex than that. I could go on and on about what those reasons for making music are, but to keep it short, I'll just say briefly that I don't promote myself for ONLY the sake of cash...
Coming back around to what you asked, I have no problem with it at all. I understand completely that you HAVE to do it (whether enjoyed or not), and what that's all tied to. I "get" all that.
Heh. You think it's an accident that I have a banner graphic containing my name, tagline, website, image-building graphics and a picture of me in every post signature here? Think it's a coincidence that I got featured with a welcome on the front page of this website?
Practically every MOVE done on these online mediums has some promotional motive. It's so damned engrained in my behavior, I sometimes don't even know I'm doing it.
You're doing it with your avatar you made here, too. Now yer gettin' it; To that I say, well played, my man!...

Banned From E.A.R.T.H. was featured on the front page also. I have the signature. Those are all a given though. What I'm talking about is reducing the number of steps it takes for a person to use in order to gain access to any promotional content. Some would say, "Let them go to the bands online content to see video, pictures or listen to music if they want". If we post it directly on the message thread you bypass one or sometimes multiple mouse clicks to get to the content.

I think it's cool that you guys are getting this stuff on video.
Probably fun being in a tribute band too because it must take away from the ego conflicts and all that goes with writing music and such. Also less time spent on writing can give you more rehersal time and make the band sound really good "live".

There are a lot of advantages.
I just quit the original band that I was in to focus on this a bit more.
