Haw! "Frankenstein" is a HEAVY one!...

I had to pass over some "honorable mentions", like "Eruption" by Van Halan (not so much an arranged actual song, but great "wankage" nonetheless...), "To Live Is To Die" by Metallica (a NEAR-instrumental), and a couple 50's/60's era ones like "Tequila" by The Champs, "Walk Don't Run" by The Ventures.

And if we're goin' back to the 60's, I kinda dig this one!:

The subset of instrumentals in rock is small, and the subset of THAT which are really good ones is smaller yet, but I'm bound to have forgotten a couple; Forgive me!...

I had the privilege to see the Edgar Winter Group play "Frankenstein" live a couple of times. Amazing show all the way around. I also had to privilege to meet the very same guitar player who appears in the video in the 1990's at The Oxbow Lake Roadhouse shortly before it burned down. I had a couple of his records as well and our band covered one of his songs. Can you guess who it is? Question

Guess? Sure I can guess. In that specific video I can't be sure. I tried cheating and looking up on line and I was surprised by a few things but this guy just might like Rock Candy.

Rick Derringer? That was my original guess but that didn't seem right for some reason.

Ding, ding, ding, ding!!!!!!! We have a WINNER! I've been a fan since All American Boy......where he looks like an All American Girl.......I think he and Suzie Quatro used the same hair stylist.

Hey, it was the 70's - ya had to be there.

He looks like he walked out of an episode of the Partridge Family.

"Get Free", by The Vines, 2004! (Think "The Kinks meet Nirvana" in the new millennium in Australia...) :

http://youtube.com/watch?v=7eDWrlDR-Ro

I was reminded of this song during a comedy special on VH1, and I can't get that bendy hook riff out of my skull!... This song gets the point across in two minutes (ala punk), which ain't easy to do!...

On the topic of millennium trashy garage rock that was in my head recently, there's The Donnas, "Take It Off". They have a retro sound, too, but they remind me more of Kiss, with obvious influences of early 80's Joan Jett. The lead singer is holding them back, I think, since she's just "local good", but, good enough, I guess... The video is kinda funny!...:

But the kings of this genre-time have to be The White Stripes. They are from Detroit, as you may know. This is not my favorite cut from them, but the video is innovative and has become a classic, which is very hard to do when the golden age of video music is long past, and a lot of innovative video has already been done. If I'm not mistaken, this was shot in various locations in downtown Detroit, but I will leave that call up to you guys that are more familiar with that area...:

Detroit has no subway. I don't think they come around Detroit to often any more. The White Strips are kind of like Madonna. Get famous and deny your home town.

This song has been stuck in my head. Please HELP ME!!!!

How about this version? This band inspired me to take up wash tub lessons.

Oh, NOOOOO!!!!

I presribe this: Play this one, which is so maddening that it can't help but stick in your brain. (I do love that it's in 7/4 time, since I love weird time signatures, though...) Then allow it to boing in your head for about a half a day:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=_KZQw5b7_Qw

Once that's seated in , then play this one a couple times. It's from the same band and album and sounds similar, but it's one of the coolest remakes there are, in my opinion. Your subconscious brain will segue to the switched one. Having THIS one in your head is better than the first, and WAY better than the one in your head originally, trust me!... :

Hope this helps...

Diggin' on THE TOADIES!...

The video is terrible and juvenile, but this one offers the best audio, which is the main point. Weird time signature again: 6/4! Their big one that put 'em on the map was "Possum Kingdom" ("behind the boathouse!"), if ya wanna hear more... This one has kinduva 80's Stray Cats groove thang goin' on... Love the syncopated power chords going into the lead, then the absolutely FUCT lead going in at 2:10; Makes me smirk every time!... :
