We had an instance where we'd gotten invited to play a show up in Alpena for the Brown Trout fest a few months back. I had no clue about if this would have been a cool show. I was told that it's a big deal up there. But our date got canceled because we were insisting on $$ for the show. Problem is there is some band shell up there that they are doing free shows at that basically kills it for all the big paid gigs for the area. There probably aren't a ton of choices so I could see where it would be a bummer for anybody that wanted to go up for $$. Our show got canned and the local promoter said this was the reason.
Now, down in Detroit they have the free shows on the Riverfront. The bar scene is dead right now as far as I can tell and I’ve had a promoter or two tell me this too. I've not seen nor been in on a great bar night for a few months. Is it possible that these free shows are killing the scene?
