Michigan has a few of these in the summertime. They are usually in small farm towns in some farmer's field, and are multi-day affairs with camping, and have a very hippy feel, since they are often run by Bohemian "artsy-fartsies"... You'll find these types peddling their crafty wares off to the side of the event, like tie-dye t-shirts, macrome, leathercraft, wood projects and pottery and such. Sometimes they'll even be "workshops" of topics with a new-age take, like yoga, basket-weaving, gardening and so on. Get the picture? Acts onstage are usually of the eclectic singer-songwriter or traditional bluegrass instrument ilk.

There's Blissfest in Bliss, Farmfest in Johannesburg, Michigan Peacefest in Lacota, and Hiawatha Musicfest in Marquette. There may be others, but these are the dominant ones I know of.

A few of my musician friends participate in these (as performers and observers), and they say it's a great time!

As a career and family guy, I envy those that are able to just take off for 3 days, pretend to have no outside life for a time, and just live like a bum and groove to music. The idea is romantic, I'll admit!... (I suspect, though, that many that participate in these are not role "slumming" at all, but instead this being what they really, truly are!...)

So have you ever went to one of these? What was it like?

The last time I blew it all the F'k off and just got into the music for a few days was at the American Rock Festival in Kalamazoo back in the early 80's.

Aside from that, every year I do a 3 day party at my house. Bier, BBQ and Jammin'. It's always a great time! Who wants to go?
