Link Profile: HABITUAL Michigan natives Chad Griffin, Jordan Cowen, Jake Larson, and Andy Jacobs have pooled their talents to create a rock band that has broken records in the SE Michigan area. The four members have been performing together since August 2002, when they played their first gig at Sunny's Campground in Wauseon, Ohio. Prior to that Jacobs, Cowen and Griffin played parties together and got together for impromptu jam sessions. The group had booked the gig at Sunny's and needed a bass player. Larson, who had jammed from time to time with Jacobs, switched from guitar, which he's played for 17 years, to bass two weeks prior to the gig and since has continued as the band's bass player as well as providing background vocals. Jacobs plays drums and splits lead vocals with Griffin, who plays rhythm guitar. Cowen plays lead guitar and also contributes background vocals as well as a lead vocal or two. "It's hard, in a small community, to find four guys who are musically talented on different instruments and all are on the same page," said Jacobs. Since their first gig in 2002, Habitual has been booked and rebooked at local venues. The group plays a mix of '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, and current music that appeals to a wide audience and Cowen said their performances are high energy. "We make it a show..." said Cowen. It's the immediate chemistry that Jacobs and the others believe has helped the band to early success. The four, who are all in their mid-20s, have grown up in the area and have known each other for years. "We don't want to be the kind of band where we just know each other as guys in the band. We hang out together. We go camping. We go on road trips. We're average Joes," said Griffin.
"One nice thing," added Larson, "is that most of us have been friends or have known each other since kindergarten. Growing up around here, we have a built in fan base that loves to see us up there as much as we love to be up there." Individually, each member has more than 10 years of individual playing experience and all are self-taught. This is the first time any of the four has been a member of a band. Jacobs said the group has come a long way since its first gig, and each member as well as the group as a whole has improved with each performance. "I just think that every time we play we get better. We think that and people tell us that," said Larson. As word of mouth has spread, the band is performing more frequently. Jacobs said the most difficult part of playing so frequently now is that time to get together and practice is limited. All four have full-time day jobs. The group is working toward creating an album of original works and to get bookings in other areas. Currently, much of the band's time is devoted to learning new music to keep shows fresh. "We've come a long way in a short time," said Jacobs. To learn more about the band and its upcoming gigs visit the Habitual website at www.habitualband.com.
