None Of The Above was formed in August of 2000.

Genre: Hard Rock / Punk / Metal

Formed in August 2000

Major Musical Influences:

Guns N' Roses, Corrosion of Conformity, Alice in Chains, Misfits, Metallica, KISS, Megadeth, Bob Dylan, the Doors, Faith No More, Alice Cooper, Soundgarden Erin Fox came from the Jackson Michigan music scene, previously fronting thrash metal madmen Psychotic Therapy from 1991 – 1995.

As a teenager, Fox rehearsed cover songs by Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper and Metallica before joining the band and it was a dead on version of “Suffer The Masses” by thrashers Flotsam and Jetsam that landed him the gig. Psychotic were a regular act at the now defunct Blondie’s nightclub. The band built a local following in the Detroit area and drew well at clubs such as Blondie’s and I Rock Nightclub. The band helped to build an underground music scene in Jackson and held many shows at halls around the area, performing with acts such as Lucifer’s Hammer, Sky Juice, Fanzamar, Harm’s Way and Battalion among many others. That group released a demo, Colors of Rage in 1992 which was critically acclaimed in the Metal underground. From 1995 – 1999, Fox provided the vocals for Fanzamar before departing to form None Of The Above.

Fox joined forces with Jesse Suter in early 2000 and began writing material on guitar for the project. The NOTA track “We The Sheep” was the first song to emerge from these writing sessions. Jesse used the pseudonym JR Metal in the band. Jesse had previously been learning guitar, but began to play bass at this time. Jesse was influenced primarily by the black metal genre.

Drummer Robert Anderson joined the group in the fall of 2000. Known as Cheez Wiz, Rob had previously played the skins in Virtigo, a local band from Stockbridge. His powerful, hard hitting style was a great match for the group. His commitment to the group has remained strong throughout his tenure with None Of The Above.

NOTA added guitarist Ryan Jock, who wad played in local punk bands. Jock remained with None Of The Above for about three months.

The group performed a Misfits tribute concert on Halloween of 2000, performing 12 of that band’s greatest songs including Earth A.D., Ghoul’s Night Out and Scream.

At this time the group recorded two self produced demos, None Of The Above and Notas Ordo Seclorum. About 100 copies were pressed of each of these demos. Most of the copies were disbursed free to fans at shows. The band focused on original material at this point, writing about 15 songs of varying metal styles. Notas Ordo Seclorum became widely circulated on the now defunct Audiogalaxy. From this distribution, the group gained hundreds of U.K. and European fans. Fans raved over the band’s unofficial cover of The Misfits Astro Zombies, which was widely circulated amongst metal and punk user groups on that website. The group intentionally made the release of this material quite exclusive in order that early fans of the band could have something special. Triarc Records is currently considering the remixing and re-release of two of the tracks from Notas Ordo Seclorum, “War Inside” and “Jupiter Moon” for a future release.

Dustin Caviness began playing keyboards for the group in 2001. The addition of keyboards accented the group’s traditional metal styling and provided a new element to their sound. Known as D, Dustin contributes greatly to the band’s overall sound. His use of MIDI effects spices up the tracks ala the police sirens used on “Trick Or Treat”. His excellent sense of texture and dynamics embellishes tracks like Lone Ranga and Godsend.

NOTA auditioned several different guitarists for the group between 2000 and 2002 including Adam Russell, Nate Howard, and Travis Conti, among others. None of these players were able to deliver enough time or effort to remain in the band. The inability of any of these players to develop the commitment to see the project through was a source of frustration for the other band members. “We spent a lot of time teaching guys the songs…they would learn about half of everything and then realize that the band was a lot of work. But the band learned some lessons from these failed attempts and those lessons helped us a great deal to get to the level we’re at now” said Fox in an interview for MegaMetal magazine.

Original bassist JR Metal left the group in 2002 to pursue other interests.

JR was replaced by Thomas Fox,” Spinach”. Thomas worked very hard to learn the bands songs quickly. He played his first show with the band in February of 2003 at The Wired Frog in Eastpointe, MI (a suburb of Detroit). Spinach provides the band with a solid footing with his thumping bass riffing. He is influenced by bands such as 311, Misfits, Metallica, Rage Against The Machine and also enjoys ska and hip hop.

In September2003, James Delemater a.k.a. “Jimmy Ferkartz” joined the group and remains a band member. The addition of Jimmy solidified the band’s line up. Jimmy is a veteran of punk act The Scabs, Enchanter ( a power metal outfit) and Sky Juice, a group which mixed hardcore and hip hop influences long before any of today’s Nu Metal rap core acts. Sky Juice was a long time staple of the Jackson metal scene and was known for their dangerous, on the edge live performances. Jimmy lists Social Distortion, Bad Brains and Mudvayne amongst his favorites.

None Of The Above spent the majority of Winter 2003 – 2004 rehearsing and refining tracks written since 2002. Of the groups 25 current original tracks, only 3 of those were penned prior to 2002.

The group has also worked on many cover tracks since its inception, currently performing around 30 covers on a regular basis. Often, the band will take a tune from the 1960s or 1970s and add their own style to the song. Fans favorite tracks include “White Rabbit” and NOTA’s version of “Paint It Black” by The Rolling Stones. The band also plays contemporary metal tracks such as Powerman 5000’s “Action”, C.O.C.’s “Vote With A Bullet” and “Rage Against The Machine’s “Guerilla Radio”.

The group has performed at venues throughout the metropolitan Detroit area, The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor ,MI and The Flight Deck in Jackson MI.
