sonicdisturbance writes Here's my review for the benefit for the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue held back on December 13th, at Boomerangs . I've included reviews of the performances for of the follwing: Babysister,
Lil’ Demon and the Sacred Monster Orchestra,
Miss. Guydid,
Busy Signal,
Sleight Of Mynd,
Soul Driven, and
Sonic Disturbance. Click "Read More" for the review.
The Lowdown
Up first Babysister, Two Ladies Acoustic Guitar & Vocals, Electric Bass and Vocals. Yes both ladies can sing and sing well. Acoustic Covers of Soft Rock and Pop Songs, not even a broken string can stop this set, as the Bass Player sang Accapella during the guitar switch. Not even 7:00 PM and the place is starting to fill up.
Second to the stage Lil’ Demon and the Sacred Monster Orchestra:
Two Guitars, Bass and Drums. Solid Blues Rock in the Stevie Ray and Hendrix Vein. The Lead Singer / Bass Player wore a cape, so it had a slight Screaming Jay Hawkins feel. The level energy in the room increased with the music as more people file into Boomerangs.
Up Next Miss. Guydid
Four Ladies and One Guy. Take some Arena Rock, some Power Ballads, add a little Grunge, shake it up and pour it straight down. With the Ladies handling Lead Vocals, Guitar, Bass and Drums and Backing Vocals, the lucky sole Guy in Miss Guydid played Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals. Think Heart meets Pearl Jam. Solid Covers and Originals that kicked it up a notch. Everyone is a solid and vital part of the group. The house is now packed and eating up the show, as well they should Ginger Bailey and the rest of the “Miss Guydid” crew put this thing together.
Busy Signal is the Fourth band of the night. Three Piece, Drums, Bass and Singer / Guitar Player. Kinda like Power Folk Punk. I was hearing a Nirvana meets Creedence Clearwater Revival kind of sound. Around this time start noticing how close to schedule everything is running and how each band has a tight sound.
It’s a little after 10:00 O’ Clock so Sleight Of Mynd takes the stage. A Five Piece band with Drums, Bass, Two Guitars and Lead Vocals. The Lead Singer also called up some Backtracks from a Laptop to open the set as the band jammed long. More Straight Ahead then Limp Biscuit or Lincoln Park, “Sleight of Mynd” had a flat out yet bouncy sound.
Six Bands worth of Gear and Equipment switching and the show is still within 30 Minutes of the schedule when Soul Driven takes the stage. With an impressive array of staging the room is dominated by Heavy Drop-D Riff Rock. This band looks ready to take the next step. From the Merchandise Table to the Stage Show to the Tunes “Soul Driven” is bringing it.
12:30 Brings Up Sonic Disturbance:
One Man, Three Keyboards, Backtracks, and 12 Crates of Lights. The Kalamazoo Gazette called it, Euro-Techno so that is what I will call what I do for this post. Ginger from “Miss Guydid” was my first ever live session player on a couple of tracks, as I was calling out changes and she was following my lead as we shared my keyboard array. I also DJ’d some Rock Tunes between sets to help with the flow.
The Props
I have to give major props to the Sound-Man Cale for being able to handle seven set-ups on the fly, only two acts soundchecked before the show started. Sometimes there can be too much sound gear, but not tonight. Two Dual 15 JBL Cabinets hanging from the ceiling and Two Floor Monitors, and a 16 channel board and No effects, groups mic’ed only what was vital and Cale Filled in the mix on the fly. The sound was “ON” within one or two Songs. Every band on the bill was tight; I am not just BS’ing. There were no train wrecks.
Now I could very easily end this review here, but please bear with my rambling.
First Ginger Bailey pulled together bands from all over the State to help launch Boomerangs Live Music Nights. Kazoo now has a new outlet for bands to play. Yes a little more PA gear could help, but those are growing pains and if the bands and crowds will cooperate I am sure it will all work out.
Second all the bands went to Kazoo twice, once for a meeting and again to play for free to help out the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue. *There were door prizes, and 50/50 raffles so no one left empty handed. Local Businesses donated prizes, and local press got behind this first time event. *The Animal Rescue Workers gave Surprise Gift Baskets of Homemade Cookies and Candy to all the performers. *The Wait Staff at Boomerangs donated their time and worked for tips only. It took a ton of effort to pull of this show and everyone worked together.
Lastly “Miss Guydid” in my opinion is a group to watch out for… Not many Guys could be in a Band with Four Women, Two of them Sisters and keep a level head. But this band is all friends and ready to work hard to put on a good show for everyone involved. The girls are not novelty players, they rock and they are having fun. They don’t act like strippers, they don’t want to beat you up. They just want to rock, and they have fun doing it. This Band has a tight sound, and catchy originals, and the X-Factor of looking good without trying to act like they are looking good. The crowd was theirs for the taking and they brought down the house.
Rock On!
