Flipping the Pig - Self Titled
Reviewed by Wendie
Flipping the Pig's
self-titled online only album seems a little unfocused, but there's still plenty to enjoy in the 6 included songs. The first track Cross the Lips sounds a lot like Pink Floyd and then goes into a 5 minute dirge reminiscent of a lo-fi Godspeed "You Black Emperor". there aren't many vocals in this one, but the few lyrics there are are great. Weight of My Love, which is the most up-front song about sex on the album, is standard bar band three chord rock. I shouldn't say standard though, because there are a couple unexpected turns (the Sloan-like bass and handclap break and the vocal break). It borrows a beat from Primal Scream's Rocks and all in all is very catchy.
Then it gets a little weird (or weirder.)

Sometimes Walking sounds like an old time crooner singing distorted words over a drumbeat for one minute. Heaven has a Flesh for Lulu feel to it almost and is another one that builds up like the first track, but significantly shorter. This one builds up to loud guitars as opposed to the more orchestrated first track.

Nameless is another mellow acoustic one in the Pink Floyd vain. Bright Love Lie has a heavy plodding beat and reworks the repetitive American Woman guitar hook on a distorted organ for the duration of the tune. This one would be the standout "headphone" track, with it's swirling keyboard noises and somewhat creepy chorus vocals.

The album's closer Linda plucks two notes on an acoustic guitar and talks about what seems to be a subtlety abusive relationship. It's unsettling in its innocence juxtaposed with the subject matter.

All in all, there are strong gothic-pop overtones here, mostly sounding like it could have been released in the late 80s or early pre-alternative 90s. The songwriting itself is great, but the production values at times need some work (take care of the tape hiss). This is definitely the work of someone to watch for what happens, even though he might not be there 100% now. But it's his first album (according to the website).
