| Sleight Of Mynd - Self Titled EP |
|
Review by Wayne Westcott,
In a time and age where new metal bands come a dime a dozen it’s almost impossible to release anything fresh and new. Yet one Michigan-based band plans to ultimately defy the stereotype of new metal bands, that band is non other then
Sleight Of Mynd. A two-piece started in Mt. Pleasant Michigan that eventually evolved into the present five piece. Sleight Of Mynd is not your typical average find when looking at all the current metal bands of the Michigan scene. Their musical styles vary from hip-hop beats and rhymes to melodic guitars and singing.
Sleight of Mynd’s self-titled EP is the first attempt to show off their talents to the world. This collection of songs is far more then your often found slaughtering of inspirations pieced with poor lyrical content. It seems these guys have jumped right ahead of the game and hit it home on the first try.
Starting the CD off is the track called Raining Down, a song that seemingly appears to be about empowerment. Although the drumming comes off as a little over the top, a possible better recording and snare drum could make it sound a bit better. Also in this track some scratching is laid down adding a rap metal vibe, but nothing too serious to categorize into the genre. The second track Fist Up is quite clear with its message, stating that walking away from a fight isn’t the right thing to do. Even though the message could be horrible for young adults, it still makes for a good theme overall. Metal background vocals on the chorus and a rap metal breakdown at the end of the song is what really makes Fist Up a homerun. The third song Shadow People is an excellent song that expresses this bands promising future. A great song all around with a mind blowing relative guitar breakdown near the end of the song. Last but not least is the track entitled Alone, a track that clearly displays a band that should by now have a record label. Alone knocks down all the musical walls and howls talent just like lead singer Jake Murphree does on the chorus. Ending the song is yet another rap metal freestyle, which at first may seem inappropriate. Yet the groove of it all is more then appropriate when trying to kick someone’s ass in the pit.
Sleight Of Mynd’s self-titled EP shows more then a little bit of promise. It is a great CD and with a little more experience as a whole band, getting signed seems to be more then a sure thing. Rating the CD was a very difficult process, but after much thought I decided to give the CD a split rating. Out of ten, the first two tracks I gave a seven, as for the last two I chose to give them an eight point five. Sleight Of Mynd is definitely a band worth checking out and it would be very narrow-minded of you if you didn’t give them a try. As always keep your head banging and your mind rocking.
Sleight of Mynd is:
Jake Murphree- Vocals, Scratches, and Samples
Josh Spence-Guitar and back-up vocals
Mike Wileman-Guitar
Tom Moser-Bass
Luke Pietscher-Drums
