| DMA 2003 Part Deux: Scmooze Fest #3 |
|
by Mitch Phillips (continued from Part One.) Napoleon K and I finally make it inside The State Theater for the DMA awards. I pretty much know what to expect - this is my third awards show in as many years. Most people ignore the presentations (unless, of course, they've been nominated themselves ) and get right to the drinking and schmoozing. The Second City Detroit comedy troupe do their best again to entertain between award presentations, but the P.A. sound, from where I'm standing, is so dreadful that they're mostly ignored by the chattering crowd. K tells me he hasn't been to a DMA in years, but the last time he went he met Mitch Ryder and Alice Cooper (he got a picture taken with Alice which is proudly displayed in his studio). No such celebrity love tonight...
A New Media for a New Detroit
As we walk from the lobby to the theater, we run smack dab into the merchandising table of DetroitEntertainment.com - OOPS That's DetroitEntertainment.net (gets me every time). Though publisher and creative director Anthony Palacio hasn't secured the absolute best domain suffix, he's got the best of everything else including the only full banner ad on their website and corner real-estate for his table at The Detroit Music Awards. You have to go past his merchandise on either side to get to the theatre and the bar. DE's website includes stunning animated graphics and samples that promote his monthly Detroit "mediazine" (think E! television but on CD and exclusively for Detroit with even more glitz and advertisements). It's a first class production and so is Palacio - who looks like a model from GQ (Ok, sing it with me boys, "Some guys have all the luck..."). Let me put it this way; as far as overall appearances go, DE makes MB look like BS. Of course, that don't take a whole lot; a shave and a hair-cut maybe.
I introduce myself to Palacio, congratulate him on creating a fine product (I haven't actually seen it yet, but I have no doubt the production quality is of the highest order). K hits him up for a video job before we split; The City Of Royal Oak may be making terminal cuts to "City Beat" production budget (nothing official yet, just a sneaking suspicion and a leaky commission). We flip through a stack of DE "mediazines" (compatible with both PC & Mac), thank him and move toward the alcohol. I'll probably order a copy of DE later, I'm saving my cash for the credit-card unfriendly State Theater bar. I've been spending way too much time in my office.
The Pre-Seduction of an Unsuspecting Balloon Animal
At this point K and I make our first DMA winner sighting. Franky "Bud Man" Budd, bassist extraordinare and now MFA from the alt/country standard-bearers The Wrenfields is hovering near the bar. The Wrenfields took Outstanding Country Record and Best Country Group this year. K and I feel particularly close to Frank since we ate tabooli out of his trunk and shared a tent at the Mamon Ride for Childhood Leukemia last summer up at Salt River Acres camp. Frank slept with his cell phone under his head, afraid he'd miss the call from his wife who was expecting child at the time.
That pony-tailed balloon clown (what's his name?) shows up at the DMAs again and begins tying up an animal hat for Frank who will no doubt wear it for the remainder of the night. But before the clown finishes twisting up the latex phallus, singer Noreen Novrocki pops up and deep-throats one end of the balloon without gagging once (kids, don't try this at home). Laughter erupts from passers-by. We're all very impressed and not slightly envious of Noreen's brand-new fiance', Ron "Hammer" Kurowski (gotta wonder where he got that sobriquet!). Congratulations to you both and to your peculiar talents.
Down in front!
I try to get past the neckless security guard keeping the hoi polloi from escaping the brass corral, but I can't get any closer to the live action due to my crappy tickets. I have to crane my neck over a throng of people to see the live performances. You'd think $25 would buy you better access to the actual "show" but this time it only gets me as close as the bar. Then again, how much further from the bar do I really want to be? I have a designated driver and nowhere else to go. Bartender, more drinks! - Mitch
