DETROIT HISTORICAL MUSEUM TO OPEN WORLD'S FIRST TECHNO MUSIC EXHIBIT IN JANUARY 2003
The Detroit Historical Museum makes history in January 2003 when it opens an innovative new exhibit celebrating Techno, a unique style of music originated in Detroit rooted in electronic technology and a driving beat. The opening of Techno: Detroit's Gift to the World marks the first time the fascinating history of this music has been comprehensively explored in a major museum.
The exhibit tells the incredible story of Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, four young men from metro Detroit, who created and developed this electronic style of dance music more than 20 years ago in local Detroit clubs and helped it become a home-grown global sensation.
Displayed in more than 1,900 square feet of gallery space in the Museum's Stark Hall, Techno: Detroit's Gift to the World will chronicle the history of the music and its Detroit roots, featuring many DJs from metro Detroit that have traveled the world and served as ambassadors for the genre throughout the music industry. The exhibit will provide visitors with a unique hands-on experience where they will be able to "create" their own Techno sounds, in addition to learning about its beginnings through an extensive collection of artifacts, photographs, audio segments and video clips.
"The Techno exhibit shares yet another story about Detroiters who have made a significant impact – not just locally but around the world," said Dennis Zembala, director of the Detroit Historical Museums. "We think the new exhibit will be of interest to both Techno enthusiasts who have followed its explosive growth, as well as to those who are curious and want to learn.
Techno: Detroit's Gift to the World is also the Detroit Historical Museum's first traveling exhibit in more than a decade. Beginning in June 2004, the exhibit will tour educational institutions and museums around the world.
