As reported on Michigan Public Radio, the Detroit Convention and Visitors Bureau (DCVB) will be promoting Detroit's music scene as a feature of the city as a travel destination. DETROIT MUSIC ARTISTS SNAG THREE OF TOP FIVE HONORS IN SPIN MAGAZINE'S "YEAR
IN MUSIC 2002" ISSUE
Awards Confirm Detroit as a Hot Music Scene, says DMCVB
DETROIT (Dec. 10, 2002) - SPIN magazine's "Year in 2002" January issue
selected Detroit artists for three of its top five annual music honors - and
the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau isn't a bit surprised.
Hitting newsstands this week, SPIN's January 2003 issue selected Eminem as
the artist of the year, the White Stripes' "White Blood Cells" as album of
the year, and Eminem's "Cleanin' Out My Closet" as single of the year. Both
Eminem and the White Stripes are based in Detroit.
"The buzz is getting out there about the diversity and talent of Detroit's
music scene," said Larry Alexander, president of the Detroit Metro
Convention & Visitors Bureau. "We not only originated Motown and Techno
music, but we have contributed some of the world's best jazz, blues and rock
artists."
In 2003, the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau will be launching a
publicity campaign to promote Detroit's lively music and art scene, which
has come to the forefront recently with Detroit-based movies like "Eight
Mile" and "Standing in the Shadows of Motown," as well as with popular
Detroit music artists like Eminem, Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker and the White
Stripes.
"We receive thousands of visitors every year just to hear the sounds coming
from Detroit," said Alexander. "And we continue to host some of the best
free music concerts of any kind that attract travelers from all over the
globe. "
Visitors interested in learning more about Detroit's music concerts,
festivals and museums should contact the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors
Bureau at 800-DETROIT or click on www.visitdetroit.com.
Following is a partial list of Detroit's upcoming free music concerts:
Detroit Electronic Music Festival (Techno): May 24-26, 2003
Downtown Hoedown (country): May (date TBD)
Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival: Aug. 30 - Sept. 1, 2003
Pontiac Arts, Beats & Eats (various artists): Aug. 30 -
Sept. 1, 2003

Taproot, the White Stripes, and so many others-its about time Michigan gets noticed for the talent it produces-I mean, I just recently started working with some bands and I am totoally blown away. We need things like this more often-its a great way to get word out about our bands/talent and its a great way for the bands to get noticed! |

What's better is that the DCVB may be using Michiganbands.com as one of the online resource for the promotion. That's good for everybody, but especially good if you use the calendar regularly. |
