 Having received plenty of swag from the heavy-mental trio BLUE TAIL FLY and their fearless leader Swipsey, we figured we they long overdue for a review.
'(BTF's) music is unusual, interesting, twisted and hard. Swipesy's guitar work doesn't crunch like typical metal - but screams like a mental banshee.'

The Blue Tail Fly ‘a free f*ckin sampler for your cheap ass’ contains five energetic tunes selected from five seperate BTF releases produced between 1997and 2002 - plus one Motown-era cover. BTF sound like a mix of Zappa, Thrill-Kill Cult, White Zombie with maybe a sinister Oingo Boingo thrown in. Though this sampler borrows from as far back as '97, the sound is consistent from track to track.
Like many metal releases, BTF's music contains demonic references. But it's more the ‘Devil went down to Georgia’ than the gothic devil stuff you find on some metal releases. This is probably due to the fact that BTF splits their time between shit-kickin' Dallas, Texas and death-metal Detroit, Michigan. Whatever the geography, the resulting music is unusual, interesting, twisted and hard.
Swipesy's guitar work doesn't crunch like typical metal - but screams like a melodic mental banshee. Swipes also delivers the guttural, White Zombie-ish vocals. Drummer "Dee-Zas-Tah" and bassist "Twitch" support Swipesy's musical armegeddon with equally adept and disturbed performances. A smattering of horns, strings and other patches are synth'd-in to add depth to the vision.
But the songs are good; the first one grabbed my attention and the remaining five held it until the very end. These guys deliver some weird shit. For example: "Painsville" (track four) is a White Zombie style tune with a surf beat and El Diablo starts out like the
Bangles and evolves into a psychobilly rawhide! Somehow it works. Also included is yet another cover of The Temptations "Ball of Confusion". Nice, but honestly, I would have rather heard another BTF original. No worse than Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams" cover - but no better either. Here's a track listing of the songs I listened to:

After hearing BTF's sampler, I’m curious to hear how BLUE TAIL FLY come off live - A totally fun band I'm sure. I hope they plan some Detroit dates in the near future.

As the month of December left me completely wiped out; emotionally, sexuallyand most definitely financially, I feel "I" deserve no wait!... I NEED this cheap ass sampler. I'm sure my mom would appreciate her very own copy as she wasn't too impressed with the used slippers under the tree. Better late than never?

I was about to pick up and just move, try to find some new gigs, but I ran across swipesy's sampler yesterday. Popped it in, and the sound just ripped up my stereo man. I truly am a cheapass, so this sampler is the best thing that could've happened to me. After hearin BTF and their killer raw style, I felt proud to be where I'm from and proud to be a rocker. Well, at least a wannabe, but this shit rocks. BTF, I give serious props to you guys. Hopefully if I get some more dough I'll pick up a full album, but until then my cheap lazy ass will be rockin to "Destroyt", "Painseville" and other kickass tunes. |
