| His and Hers Live Reviews: Mixxle Plix @ The Token |
|
It doesn't happen often, but it does happen (just don't bet on it happening again any time soon). We have not one, but two reviews (his & hers) of the same show at The Token Lounge last Saturday. The Kat and Distortion Dave give their independent reviews of a M.A.M.A. Productions show featuring Miixxle Plixx. Here's a hint: Sounds like somebody might be looking for a new job soon. . . Click "Read More" for the reviews.
Her Take
MixxlePlix @ The Token Lounge-Westland (10-12-02) by The Kat
First off, I must express my disappointment in the sound and lighting at
what was formerly one of my favorite venues. I still like the atmosphere
of the Token and am always comfortable there but as a listening room, a
return to ‘glory days’ would be welcome.
Lacking a sound-check and
making allowances for technical aspects, I found MixxlePlix to be an
interesting band. Definitely not something you can throw into a genre so
they are aptly named. Alternative is too broad a word but for the most
part, ‘mild punk’ is how I would describe them. I say mild because I found
them to be lacking some of the energy that some of their tunes could use
to stand-out. Mostly referring to the ‘tightness’ that speed-metal
requires.
As it was, going from ‘mild punk’ to ballads came off as a
sort of mish-mosh that I think a higher-energy level in the punkish
tunes would have helped. Their ballads were excellent though with the
exception of the first one and I enjoyed the punked up cover of some
goofy ‘feel good’ song that was done to close, but the Billy Joel cover
was just plain awful. Was glad they didn’t close with that one.
They
seem to have a lot of fans and I definitely would like to catch
MixxlePlix again as I see potential if they continue to work on what
they do well. So keep up the good work! Oh yea, one last thing, a note
to the female fans who thought to deface the restroom with band
graffiti…”show some class eh?”.

His Take
Mixxle Plix, Token Lounge, 10/12/02 by Distortion Dave Kupczak
And you thought Simon was a prick!
Almost speechless. Just when I thought I'd heard it all before, I would find myself very unexpectedly willing to play the card that I had thought I would never want to play. Having a pre-garage era background in the delights of the worst noise ever made, as well as subjecting anyone in a quarter-mile radius to my own interpretations of "Jimi Hendrix-meets Iggy and the Stooges", I am obliged to tip my hat to the professionalism of the members of Mixxle Plixx.
Just to confirm my suspicions I stuck my ears behind the P.A.
only to find what I already knew: These guys know their material like the back of their hand. How does one judge a band? Let me count a few ways. - Tight? No problem there. Good? That is subjective to say the least but yes, the band is good. I could tell from my seat, let alone the "what does it sound like on-stage" test.
- Original? In no fault of their own, this reviewer has to plead the fifth - it's all been done before. I really wish I could claim otherwise.
- Talented? Without a doubt. Everyone in this band has reason to be proud. They have the chops of a band that has put their ass on the line to perform a set of tunes flawlessly, and with any artist I'm certain that they feel otherwise. I've met very few that didn't think they could do better.
- Performance? I have an educated advantage here, and this is where I play the card that I never wanted to play until now.
Sure, I'm momentarily abandoning my paint-by-the-numbers rating system, and believe me, there is a lot more to it. This ain't American Idol (I don't waste my senses on such tripe). You see, when Fred & Barney staked the claim "when we say it's pretty, we mean pretty loud" a whole new generation of children knew exactly what that meant. Iggy knew it. Jimi knew it and used it to its full advantage. I am still amazed that my parents were wrong when they said that loud music would screw up my hearing and cause me to go deaf. The soundman has a tough job - but ya know what? This was inexcusable.
The fucking Circle Jerks have always had a better sound!
And you can bet they're still on a low budget (see them in November at St. Andrews). So what gives with The Token Lounge, home of countless touring national acts? Alright, everyone has an off night but even the damned Ramones could fix this without a soundman (although they would probably only use the P.A. for vocals!)
Mr. Soundman, welcome to "Distortion Dave's" honest opinion of what really went south and (unbeknownst to the band) screwed an otherwise valor performance:
#1) I would bet my last dollar that Mixxle Plix sounds great anywhere else.
#2) Mixxle Plix played their collective asses off.
#3) Mixxle Plix smiled like mature professionals. I would be in jail for killing you.
#4) Lead vocals, bass and a half-assed drum mix do not represent an entire ensemble.
#5) Guitar amps were seemingly mic'd up for appearance only. (You heard me!)
#6) The guitarists don't wanna hear anything else. (So your monitor mix is done, right?)
#7) The bass player sounded awesome. (He wouldnít let you touch his rig, would he?)
#8) It's been a long night and you wanna go home or anywhere else.
#9) the young hotties who got in with a fake I.D. are with the band so you don't care about the sound anymore!
#10) Mixing sound is as lonely a job as a Maytag repairman and almost as thankless.
You already know the rule that youíre only as good as your last project so, like, dude, "You Suck, Youíre Fired!"
Opinions are always welcome:
Complaints can be shit-canned at Distortion Dave

Re: His and Hers Live Reviews: Mixxle Plix @ The Token (Score: 1) by Bill on Friday, October 18, 2002 @ 17:22:00 EDT (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.mamaproductions.com | Very good and honest review by both..I must agree with Dave on the sound quality. The only things mic'd were the #1 Vox....kick&snare...and #2 guitar as lit up on the board. The sound man did no sound check on any of my three bands...and I tried to do what I could with Mixxle Plix but nothing was mic'd...they were just there for appearance..with everything bleeding through the hot ones and no solid adjustments could have been made! They(Mixxle Plix)..like the others were givin'a standard houseboard pre-set and the shaft on sound. I totally agree! Thanx for the reviews..very inciteful!
