| T.N.T.Blues At Whites In Saginaw |

I recently got an invitation from Saginaw guitar monster Matt Bessey to attend an open mic blues jam at a Saginaw bar I'd never heard of. As an aspiring Blues Hound, I'm hard pressed to skip any opportunity to play with the proverbial big boys. So, with more than a little trepidation, I loaded up my sax and headed to Saginaw from my digs in Lapeer. Now, for those of you unfamiliar with Matt's guitar playing...change that by any means necesary!!! This guy has the goods! I was introduced to him at a Larry McCray hosted session at Rubes Booze and Blues in Flint (see below for location), where Larry assured us that Matt was a force to be reckoned with.
The T.N.T. band is a tight and creative unit, which provides the perfect underpinning for some hardcore jamming. More importantly, the small and, how do I tactfully say this---um, colorful, well worn bar room absolutely oozes blues from its pores!
This is the kind of place one expects to hear some serious blues in, and the wall to wall crowd this Thursday evening was not disappointed! There's a sense of history to this place, aided by the presence of aging local blues legends like The Blues Creators. The place, and the people, pretty aptly re-create the feel of some of the off the beaten track blues clubs I've encountered in the south. All in all, an incredible jam session which deserves a little more attention than it's getting.
If you're all about the blues, you should be packing up your gear in advance of next Thursday's jam. If you're looking for an opportunity to get acquainted with the blues in a comfortable environment, the place might not be posh, but the music, and the comraderie, are definitely as rich as they get. Definitely worth checking out!
Rubes Booze & Blues is located at 1117 N. Chevrolet in Flint. You can 810- 767-9873 or get a Map To Rubes. |
