| Larry McCray To Host Blues Jam |
|
saxsymbol writes
Rubes Booze and Blueshas long hosted an open mic blues jam on Mondays. This information often elicits no more than a perfunctory yawn from the music community. Recently, however, the host band for this little musical adventure has been none othe than Mr. Blues is my business (and business is good) Larry McCray.
Now, I've been part of way too many jams hosted by name artists that leave the little guy feeling like, well, a little guy. Larry's different. This jam has become a real gem, and what might almost qualify as a community service for young Flint musicians. In addition to drawing some first rate talent, Larry and band-mates Johnny B. Gaden on bass and Steve McCray on drums are genuinely friendly and helpful to those less musically fortunate than themselves! It's not at all uncommon to see Larry or Johnny giving an impromtu lesson to interested players.
As a sax player returning to the business after several years off, I know all too well how easy it is for young-or inexperienced-players to get the "fuzzy end of the lollipop" at jam sessions. That's why I'm unabashedly recommending this jam to all Blues Hounds. Whether you come to play, or just to catch a set or two by Larry's band, this is a great way to spend a Monday evening. Hell, this is a great way to spend just about any evening!
Rubes Booze & Blues is located at 1117 N. Chevrolet in Flint. You can 810- 767-9873 or get a Map To Rubes.

I have heard quite a bit about Larry, but I've never met him. He's been on my mind just a bit lately because just a couple of weeks ago I took this Flying V guitar that Larry is playing in this picture into my shop for some repairs. I'm touching up a previous repair that Larry had done to the guitar in Europe. Everyone at the music store I work with (Rainbow Music, Grand Rapids) told me what a nice guy he is....
Then I see this article, with its points about how Larry runs his "Open Mic" night, and I think it's so right on. I have run open mic nights for quite a while, and I always try to get to everyone, and I know how hard it can be. I've also been a visitor hoping to play, but since no one knew me I was over-looked.
The new-comers to open mic nights need to be made to feel welcome, and they should get a chance to play before the people who come every week! Sometimes, I have been so surprised because the little squirrelly guy who I thought was gonna suck gets up, and he is great! You never know.
How will your night ever succeed if you give newcomers an unpleasant time?
Guys with huge egos, who give special treament to their friends and ignore the players they don't know are missing the point of a good Open Mic night.
I just love a guy who has room for everyone, and doesn't need to show a huge ego because his music can speak for itself!
I'm going to make sure that I do a killer job fixing that Flying V! |

I've jammed w/Larry before and he was a friendly, down-to-earth guy. I've been to MANY jams where the local "star bluesmen" get to play all night and then they get around to remembering me in the audience. What makes it worse is that most guys wanting to jam have day "gigs" and cant be up till 2:00 a.m. waiting to jam.
I have some friends in Flint that regularly jam and record w/Larry and it would fun....if it wasn't 45 miles away! Somehow I'll make it up there.
Johnny B Gayden. Another outstanding individual. Johnny's more than happy to see you onstage, or off at a table having conversation with him. Check out Albert Collins live for Johnny's monster chops.
