Real Detroit's "The Music Show" Debuts on WADL

And unexpected night of debauchery ensued last night at The Double Olive in Dearborn when Webmaster Rick and I were invited to discuss the state of local independent music with Real Detroit's "The Music Show" executive producer, Thomas McPhee. The independent film maker, entrepreneur and executive producer of Cave Studio already has six episodes of the half-hour, local music variety show in the can. The premier episode debuts tonight at 11:30p.m. EST on WADL (ch 38) and features the music or appearances by Johnny El Camino, 19.5 Collective, Knee Deep Shag, D'Phuzion, Trash Brats, Pamela Wise, and Whitey.

Check your local listings, visit CaveStudio.net or just unplug your stupid cable box and tune in; WADL is an honest-to-goodness free local televison station out of Mt. Clemens that you can tune in with that dusty pair of rabbit ears you thought you'd never need again. (You see kids, in ancient history television was FREE. No, really. And you had to tune stations in with two antennae and fine tune with a little dial on the television - yes, you actually had to touch the TV - that's what we called "Interactive.")

Though we were late getting to the party, McPhee treated us to free drinks and a mini-dvd version of the show bar-side. We couldn't actually hear the bands on the video due to the roving Mariachi band (I mean the read deal - with trumpets, violins, guitarras and a chubby little latin dude with a sombrero and an amazing voice that filled the room without a mic.) but we could see "The Music Show" was a world-class, MTV styled production for showcasing local music. I later confirmed this by watching a carefully-guarded promotional videotape at home. Very cool - very, exciting.

Robb Roy Back In The Studio

Robb Roy members John Cottos and Mike Kudreiko were on hand for the event. The band is currently recording in bassist Cotto's former business turned studio in Dearborn after a year's worth of promoting "Happy" throughout the world. The title track's video took top honors in the "Much Music Video Competition" - beating out such heavy competitors as Radiohead, Macy Gray, and Mary J. Blige. The band is pursuing corporate sponsorships for the new release to aid in deferring the cost of touring. "The attention and opportunities we've been given over the last year have been amazing," said Kudreiko. "But I still have to buy a loaf of bread once in a while, ya know?" Robb Roy will be performing a special acoustic show tonight at The New Place Lounge. See the calendar for details.

Scene Safely in the arms of M.A.M.A. Having given up on any hope of a meeting or serious discussion in the standing-room-only party at The Double Olive, Webmaster Rick and I cozied up to the bar and chatted with another Music Show invitee, "Metro Area Music Association (M.A.M.A.) creator and hyper-D-Town band promoter, Bill "Mad Jyngals" Horvath. Bill said he represents over 150 bands of all genres in the area and often books, promotes and pulls-off over thirty shows a month! "It gets pretty heavy sometimes, " Horvath said. "It's not uncommon for me to drive to Detroit and Ann Arbor and back to Dearborn all near the end of a typical night. It's worth it."

M.A.M.A. has earned some well-deserved respect in Detroit, packing venues like a St. Andrews Hall at a show that took advantage of all three floors, featuring eighteen bands. Due to a misprint at Ticketmaster, the shows attendees showed up an hour early for the door. "We had people three deep, wrapped around the block, " said Horvath. "The fire marshall showed up later that night because he was concerned about capacity. I think we clicked-off about 1350 people, safely below the 1800 capacity but more than enough to make a hell of a party."

M.A.M.A has been described by some anonymous posting nay-sayers as merely another union. Fair enough, the organization even plans to offer bands 'health and life insurance, equipment discounts, free music conferences and workshops, and investment sponsorship grants within 2002.' But he's created more than that, I believe. He's leading the way toward the cohesive 'music scene' that has eluded the area for half a century. Bill Horvath is a True Believer in local independent music because he walks the walk, takes care of business and demands that his acts live by his credo of, 'Honesty, Integrity, Simplicity, and a Hard Work Ethic.' "We're taking the city back," said Horvath. It will be a different scene when we're safely in the arms of M.A.M.A.

Klaver Project Wows MB Staff

Having drank more than a few tequila's, Webmaster Rick dragged my liquor-soaked hide to the far end of the bar to witness the serendipitous surprise of The Klaver Project, an crafty quintet who can dig an infectious groove even in the carpeted floor-level stage of the Olive. The band covers, no - owns the material from acts as diverse as U2 to Stevie Wonder. They have a way of delivering covers that sound better than the originals. I was unable to find a website as of this article, but you can e-mail the band at klaverproject@yahoo.com to find out where you can witness this gifted band.

While I slurred along with Klaver Project's version of Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City," Wrenfields' songbird Noreen Novrocki treated me to a birthday drink and a cigarette after midnight - which is a really good thing since I'd completely emptied my wallet at the bar.
Thanks, Nor.
