Artist: Lucy Webster
CD: “Keeping My Fingers Crossed”
review and interview by Mitch Phillips
Label: Red Jag Records
The temptation to mention Lucy Webster’s age when reviewing her music is symptomatic of pop culture; it tends to value money over art, fashion over substance and yes, youth over age. Pop consumers are willing to ignore a celebrity’s middle-age when they’ve rewarded us with a long, illustrious career in the music biz (e.g. Madonna, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt) but are they as willing to give an unknown that attention when they’ve just released their second album at age 47? Lucy Webster’s ‘keeping her fingers crossed.’
Webster’s sophomore release proves the adage that a craftsman’s best work is done not in the whimsical exploits of youth, but in the contemplative and settled wisdom that comes with weathered patience and hard-won middle-age. She’s lost no ground musically in postponing her career and may have done us all a favor in collecting the necessary life experiences before putting pen to paper. “Keeping My Fingers Crossed” is a rich listening experience; not only for it’s excellent songwriting and polished production (Recorded, mixed and mastered by John Fritz of Digital Arts, Grand Rapids) but for it’s variety of earthy textures, compelling melodies and introspective and (gasp) mature lyrics that draw you deep into Webster’s world.
The gravity of that world is firmly held in place by accomplished performances by David Mosher (mandolin and fiddle), Rick Devon (drums), Jay Round (stand-up bass), Charlie Hoats (frettless bass), Allen Finkbeiner (percussion), David Mosher (fiddle, lead-guitar), David Molinari (marimba), Al Thayer (electric bass), Pete Bardolph (electric lead guitar) with cameos by Brooks Williams on slide and Jan Krist on backing vocals. Each of these fine musicians deserve a listner’s thanks in creating an aural experience which is deeply satisfying. From the folky punch of “No One Else” to the sweet melancholy of “Wisterian Blooms,” the infectious optimism of “Driving With You Tonight” or the dreamy infatuation of “Wrong Again,” this CD delivers on several emotional fronts.
