Although Perpetual Hype Engine list Zeppelin and Floyd as influences (facetiously, I'd guess) "Unpacified," from their 1999 release entitled, "CyberChrist," is more reminiscent of Ministry's "Stigmata"; the music is fast, violent, psychotic and disturbed and the lyrics are delivered via
throaty shouts and growls. Perpetual Hype Engine have refined the
"scream-band" technique (a style too-often heard from young white males in the Detroit area) to an art form, making them the only band I've heard that can pull it off convincingly. Combining guitar-crunching metal with stark electronic embellishments, PHE creates a sonic landscape fraught with dangers or thrills depending on your perspective. This is musical testosterone plugged into a 640v transformer while standing in a puddle of your own piss.
I've heard a lot about Perpetual Hype Engine in the two years I've volunteered for michigangaritsts.com, specifically that they are one of the most exciting live bands in Detroit. Is it true, or is it Hype Engine? You be the judge.
