carrickhouse writes Auburn Hills, MI – Americana/Roots music has fast become the most hip and exciting music to experience live, which is exactly why Carrick House Concerts is teaming up with Callahan’s to launch a new “Roots” music series in Oakland County. Presenting performances from top national/international touring artists and the area’s finest local musicians, the collaboration is 100% about the music. . The series will launch on September 5th with a rare area appearance by British rock icon Graham Parker. New York singer/songwriter Tom Freund and Ferndale artist John Milroy will also perform as part of the bill.
“Were committed to promoting the very best live roots music available and presenting it in an environment that is welcoming to everyone,” said Carrick House founder Craig Carrick. “Our goal is to attract college kids, music geeks, grandparents, factory workers and upper crusties.

The initial schedule includes bluegrass, folk, blues, alt-country, pub rock and even “jam” rock. We are honored to have punk music icon Tommy Ramone, the only living member of The Ramones coming to do bluegrass/folk music – plus a rare meet and greet with fans. Here’s a chance to meet and talk to living legend. Punk rockers mixed with bluegrassers….that just seems cool and unique. Diverse Americana/Roots music is what we as partners and this series are all about,” continued Carrick.
Carrick House Concerts is considered a “Roots” music pioneer having regularly presented noteworthy artists in concert for the past several years. Callahan’s opened late last year in Auburn Hills and quickly established itself as a premiere entertainment club by featuring the best local entertainment and establishing a successful Blues concert series.
“Callahan’s is a perfect fit for us and “Roots” music because it is a small intimate venue with an honest passion for music. Additionally they have top-notch gear, great people, and a great location,” commented Carrick. “Located near the intersection of I-75 and M-59 it easy to get too from anywhere in the metro area. Their start-of-the-art EAW PA, computerized lighting, and skilled production manager allow them to deliver quality events. Most importantly they are into the experience and making sure patrons are comfortable by doing the little things like restricting smoking and serving great food and beverage. Its friendly like a coffee shop, but also a place where you can have a cold beer or adult beverage and see a first-class show,” he concluded.
Callahan's located at 2105 South Boulevard (South of the Palace and Just East of Opdyke) in Auburn Hills. Open Monday - Saturday serving lunch and dinner the venue has a neighborhood bar & grill when not hosting national entertainment. Large high-definition televisions and video screens are located throughout the venue. Full bar service is available along with outdoor patio dining. For more information visit www.ATCALLAHANS.com.
Tickets for series events are available in advance. Tickets may be purchased in person at Callahan’s, online at www.ATCALLAHANS.com, and via phone at 248-858-9508. Shows are all ages and doors open one-hour prior to show time.
Upcoming series events include:
- Fri, Sept 5 @ 8PM - Graham Parker, with special guests Tom Freund and John Milroy – Rolling Stone magazine credits him with writing two of the “Top 100 Albums of All Time.” His music couples punk’s energy with American R&B, country and soul music. Parker is considered one of the most important singer/songwriters of the 20th century likened to Elvis Costelleo and Joe Jackson.
- Sun, Sept 7 @ 4PM – The Milroys with The Motor City Sidestrokers - The Milroys exemplify Americana music melding dark, murky, joyous and lighthearted themes into their traditional music. They are the definition of the Americana experience to newbies as well as seasoned veterans of the music. The Motor City Sidestrokers have been described as a “rockin jug band” playing old favorites and their own original music.
- Sun, Sept 14 @ 4PM – Corinne West with The Jill Jack Band - A co-bill of two of the most significant female singer/songwriters on the scene today. Corrine West hails from California and delivers an alt-country/folk/bluegrass performance with an emphasis on songwriting and a sultry vocal show. Detroit’s own Jill Jack Band creates folk/rock music that is personal, tender and can rock your socks off.
- Sun, Oct 12 @ 4PM - Sarah Lee Guthrie/Johnny Irion with special guest Tim Pak - “Authentic.” “Timeless.” “Harmonious.” “Exhilarating.” Any or all of these adjectives could describe the folk-rock sound created by Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion. The musical richness and depth of their collaboration is irrefutable proof that the disarming granddaughter of Woody Guthrie/daughter of Arlo Guthrie and the prodigious South Carolinian quite naturally bring out the best in each other. Local singer/songwriter Tim Pak, formerly of The Salt Miners, opens the show.
- Sun, Nov 9 @ 4PM - The Spikedrivers with special guest - The Spikedrivers are a string band with rock and roll gusto, a strong groove and energetic deliverance of an Americana stew. Mixing bluegrass, folk, blues, and even country The Spikedrivers enthusiastic approach to performance is coupled with serious musical talent. A string band with a jam band mentality.
- Sun, Nov 16 @ 4PM – Tommy Ramone’s Bluegrass Band “Uncle Monk” wsg Black Jake & The Carnies – Meet Tommy Ramone, the only living original member of legendary punk/rock group The Ramones, but don’t expect punk music. Uncle Monk is an alt-country, indie-bluegrass duo featuring Tommy Ramone on vocals, mandolin, guitar, banjo and dobro and Claudie Tienan on vocals, guitar and bass. Ramone says, “There is a similarity between punk and old time music, both are home brewed as opposed to schooled, both have earthy energy and there is a certain cool in old time music that is found in the best alternative acts”. Ypsilanti-based “Black Jake and The Carnies” are described as a alt-bluegrass or “Crabgrass” band with an edge open the show.
