Back In LA LA LAnd With Ty Stone

Back in 2002, before he was signed to Top Dog, Ty Stone was just another struggling bandhead with a guitar, a dream and maybe enough attitude and a good enough voice to make that all work out for him. But the only way to find out for sure was to make some tough choices and risk everything he knew; he left his friends, left his band and left Michigan 2500 miles behind to find his fortune in Los Angeles - which, lucky for us, took him right back home to Michigan. Ty kept in touch all along the way and shared his LA stories with us in three installments: "How To Get A Gig In LA", "Mojave Marinola & The Desert Dream" and "How I Got A Decent F***'n Record Deal".
Now, six years later and much richer for the experience, Ty is back in LA to do some business and figured it would be a perfect time to reminisce and add another chapter to the story (thanks for remembering us Ty).

Happy Easter From Sunny California
by Ty Stone
This year I'm reporting from Sunny California! I know that any one who had to shovel snow this morning is probably pissed that I even mentioned that, so let me apologize in advance for being wit it! ;)
I think that Holidays are a great time to reflect because they come around every year, and they're generally memorable in one way or another. This year I'm feeling really positive about most things. It's always nice to be at home with family, and although I can't actually be with them this year, they've decided to leave a spot for a computer at the table so that we can video-conference during dinner. It sounds like some weird science fiction movie where the prodigal son is just a talking head on a computer screen. I'm like Max Headroom. hahahaha. In case I just lost you. Here is Max Headroom (below left).

I remember the first year I moved out here. During Easter 2003 the owner of Molly Malone's let me have a huge Orphan Easter dinner there. I invited like 20 friends, musicians, and actors who were away from home, and we had a huge dinner together. We put all the tables together and had like a 25 foot mega-table. I made Pork Chops on the grill and we ate and partied. It was one of the best Easters I remember having. I think that people in this town get so lonely sometimes that they shut all their feelings out, and then when you do something like Orphan Easter, it reminds them how nice friends and family can be, and that you're not alone at all. Needless to say the tradition continued and this year we'll actually be having Orphan Easter at BI's crib. Since he and Rae Rae are getting married next week they're adopting us. I guess we're not orphans anymore.
One year I called my Mom and Dad from San Sebastian, Spain to wish them a Happy Easter. One year I went to Frank Scalambrino's house and his Dad made the meanest hand made pasta for dinner. One year Frank, Nate, and Whitey all came up to my house for easter and we had an easter egg hunt. We were like 20 years old. We literally almost came to blows over that shit. I think me and Sam drove home from South Carolina straight to Detroit to make it to dinner year before last. My Mom has always insisted that if humanly possible we all be there for Easter Dinner. I usually insist on making it humanly impossible. ;)
So Happy Easter to all of you! I hope you can look back on some fond memories of the past, and also look to some even better memories in your future. And I hope you all have something in your life this year that you can be thankful to God for. Remember after all the reason we celebrate Easter! That's something to be thankful for all on it's own.
On another note, Doop called me this morning to inform me that I'd been nominated for a Detroit Music Award for Best POP/ROCK Songwriter. I was actually very humbled by that. I've never been nominated before, but just like Easter, I have quite a few memories of the awards. I remember the first time I went 10 years ago with my band 2 Days Straight. When you first start playing out in Detroit you begin to hear about the "scene" and the "scenesters." At the time I think the biggest thing to hit the State Theatre was The Howling Diablos, Broadzilla, Deathgirl.com, FACE, Stroker Ace. Sweaty Suede Lips. Wow, I haven't thought about that shit in a while. Anyway, no one had heard of us. Hahaha. And I remember seeing all those people in the same room and wanting so badly to be a part of it. And every year I used to check the nominations, and every year I'd be disappointed. Eventually though, I moved to LA and kind of let it all go until 3 years ago when I returned in Style.
I had just met Kid Rock a week before the DMA's in Los Angeles. He came to see a show at Room 5. A week later, I was in a stretch Navigator on my way from the Airport to his house in Clarkston with everything I owned in a suitcase. In my haste to accept the offer he'd given me to take me under his wing I literally threw everything I owned in the garbage, except for what I could put in that suitcase. I tell this story a lot because people ask me what Bob is "really like." I respond by telling them about how nervous I was when I got there, half expecting the American Bad Ass video, and how Bob showed me to my room and carried that suitcase up there for me. I think it really shows what a normal guy, and good host the man is. Don't fret tho Kid Rock fans, cause some days he's also the long-haired redneck Rock'NRoll son of Detroit. ;)
Anyway, that night, my first night in town rollin' with Rock, we went to the Detroit Music Awards. We walked in the back and they led into the theatre and directly to our seats front and center. I think we sat with Howard Hertz and Punch Andrews and that crew. I had some idea, but I was still sort of ignorant to who these people were. As they parted the crowd like the Red Sea to lead us to our seats, cameras started popping off like I was with Paris Hilton or something. And I remember seeing Sue Static and Sterling a few tables back, and thinking how fucking wierded-out they must have been to me in that situation. They have always encouraged me in my career, and later, when I was able to talk to them they told me how proud they were of me. It was a great night for me.
Anyway, since then It's been a hell of a ride, but until this morning, I'd still never been nominated for a songwriting award. I sort of forgot all about it until Doop called me and it all sort of came back to me. You might think what songwriters do, but you have no idea. If people had any idea what we put ourselves through financially, physically, and emotionally to do this. We basically take our deepest darkest feelings and observations and fears, make them rhyme, set them to music, and then scream it at the top of our lungs for you to judge. And although I didn't realize I was seeking this, to be recognized for your commitment to that kind of art is personally a big deal, and I'm really excited and thankful for the nomination.
Just as exciting as all that is that Doop was nominated for best Country Songwriter, Best Country Album, and Best Country Artist. I couldn't be more proud of his achievements and can say that there isn't a more deserving guy. If you can vote on these things please go and vote for Doop because he's earned it. And while me and Sam are sitting around smoking cigarettes and I spend all day dissing all my ex's in song after song, Doop goes to work and keeps River Rouge from burning down as a fireman. And when me and Sam can't pay rent, or can't keep the lights on, or need a van, or an axe, or a ride, or a beer, guess who comes through. Doop son - here's to you, motherfucka! Congratulations! Inside Outlaws, bro!
Xoxo
