Mitch's Mind: Don't Get That Same Tattoo
So I'm stripping the paint of the old front door and I break out the iPod, put it on shuffle, skip a few tracks, then hear "Tattoo" from Chelsea Michigan's South Normal.

Don't get that butterfly / tattoo upon your thigh
I know that other guys / might think your sexy
the same as every girl that has the same tattoo

It's such a great song that's all it takes to get me to listen to the entirety of "Emotion Picture" and "No More Songs About Girls" while I scrape paint.
Click "read more" below.

Unfortunately, if you haven't heard, South Normal announced their dissolution after fourteen years of fighting the good fight. It seems the last straw was the rejection by a major label after a showcase in New York. "You're just not what we're looking for right now," they said. Crueler words haven't been uttered since, "I just want to be friends."

I'm going to assume that said major label isn't looking for a long-term partner who would flourish in their economic love nest. No, they probably want a fuck buddy they can nail until the patina wears off - then kick'em to the curb when the new model comes along. Same old story. The record industry is incredibly myopic.

But major labels don't exist to enhance their listeners inner lives. That's not their problem. They exist to make money and reduce their risk - which is why I ignore them and spend my time and cash on the hungy locals. I like to think there's always a market for great music (I know, a hopeless romantic) but the labels seem unwilling to pursue the MOR rock market, which, I would argue, is the same reality that sunk Robb Roy. These days everybody seems to be aiming for the low-hanging fruit; those who will buy what they're told to buy and those who buy what everybody else is buying.

So the members of South Normal will go their seperate ways with the exception of tying up a few loose ends. Nathan and Jeremy Mackinder are already working other projects. But I have to wonder how the'yre going to adapt to their new situation. Will they stay true to their musical instincts and provide us with more great music, or will they get that sexy tattoo in hopes that the boys will come a callin'?
