cherri writes " Northern Michigan recording artists Cherri & The Violators will perform at 6 Feet Under in Kalamazoo on Saturday, April 22 at 9:00 PM. Cherri & the Violators utilize the entire spectrum from delta blues to electric guitar-driven rock to create a unique and highly danceable sound. Click "read more" below. Slide guitar afficionados enjoy the title track, “Empty Pockets”, along with the upbeat country blues, “Frettin for Nothing”, and the irresistible dance tune, “Up for Me”. Guitarist Tony Burke will have jaws dropping from the very first note. Every lead is different, but his intensity never wanes.
Cherri Bendig, (vocals/guitar), Paul Bendig (bass), Tony Burke (guitar) and Hank Cupp (percussion) recently released their second original CD, Empty Pockets. The CD has been receiving regular airplay on several Michigan public radio stations.
Reviewer comments on Empty Pockets include: “The Benzie/Manistee County-based band labels their music “contemporary blues,” and you have to hand it to them: they have succeeded in slapping the paddles on the old zombie blues and reviving it as their own personal creation with songwriting that is exceptionally strong.” – Robert Downes, Northern Express Magazine.
“On their second disc, Northern Michigan based Cherri and the Violators explore the glory days of the mid 70’s where songs that rocked were informed by the blues but were well removed from the Delta. That’s not to say that blues fans won’t find familiar sounds here. Instead, the blues creeps in by way of the band’s self penned lyrics and the terrific guitar work of Tony Burke. Lead vocalist Cheryl Bendig delivers the songs in a voice that has the raw power of Janis Joplin but the finesse of Ann Wilson.” Mark Smith – West Michigan Blues Society.
Band Bio: Since 2000, vocalist Cheryl Bendig, bassist Paul Bendig, guitarist Tony Burke, and drummer Hank Cupp have dished up their own brand of bluesrock. Each performer has a background in rock, with influences in classical, jazz, and roots country. Performances feature dynamic, wide-range vocals, a variety of guitar techniques, driving rhythms, and an all over good time. Their signature originals get regular airplay on WYCE, WGVU, and international online radio stations, as well as reaching #3 on the blues charts at Soundclick.com with “PMS BLUES” from their “First Offense” CD, released in 2004. “Empty Pockets”, their second CD, was released February 18, 2005.
