Forget giving up-armored Humvees, shorter tours of duty, or a much-needed raise in pay and benefits as a Christmas bonus for the troops and their poverty-stricken families. My illustrious congressman knows just what the troops need to help them fight the War On Terror - a congressional rock band! Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R - 11th district) will reportedly be playing lead guitar in a band known as "The Second Amendments" and plans to entertain our troops overseas with four other congressmen in the coming months, according to a story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Click "read more" below for details.
The publicly-funded, bipartisan band members (including Minnesota Democrat Collin Peterson on vocals, Florida Republican Dave Weldon on Bass, Nevada Republican John Porter on Keyboards and Columbia Republican Kenny Hulshof on drums) will be going on a whirlwind world tour with gigs in Iraq, Afghanistan, Germany with possible stops in Pakistan and Africa.
While The Second Amendments World Tour is officially considered a congressional fact-finding mission that will include visits to hospitals, assessing post-election results in Iraq and 'other activities' (no word on whether those activities will include actual oversight of how hundreds of billions of dollars in no-bid contracts are being spent), the congressmen will be doing what they do best after their taxing workday is over - getting feel-good face-time in front of thousands of potential voters.
"Hopefully they'll overlook our lack of talent and appreciate the effort," said congressmen and drummer Kenny Hulshof to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Lucky for him, that's never been a pre-requisite for getting re-elected.
- Mitch
