| Serendipity, Synchronicity Lead Me Back to The Bag |
|
A couple months ago I took a trip to the MB Geocache to replace some CD's that had been damaged by rain. Apparently, a curious raccoon or some other varmint opened the cache and spread its contents throughout the woods while looking for something good to eat. When I got to the cache, I cleaned it up, removed the damaged discs, replaced them with new ones and hiked back to my truck. Originally, I intended to dispose of the damaged CD's . . .
... but when I got back to my truck I realized I didn't have anything decent to listen to. So I sifted through the pile and found a bootleg copy of South Normal's 2000 debut, "Emotion Picture".
Whoever left it must have liked it so much they couldn't part with the original. The home-made j-card was saturated, it's ink-jet colors blurred into one another making the cover art almost indistinguishable. I opened the cover and discovered that the glue from the cheap disc appliqué had dissolved and it slid off the CD like a glob of technicolor snot. Yuck! Still, the disc itself wasn't scratched. If I could clean it up, it should play.
Well, thanks to serendipity and the reliability of plastic, South Normal's "Emotion Picture" is now one of my favorite local CD's. To me they sound like The Doors meets Roxy Music. Excellent songs, excellent production and a gem of a release. What's more, it was produced by Michael Lutz -the very same guy who produced Radiocraft's latest rocker "Red" (no wonder it sounds so f'in good).
Skip ahead about a month and serendipity becomes synchronicity.
I'm taking the wife and kid to Arts, Beats & Eats. They want to see some art and sample the food. I want to see Radiocraft, Robb Roy and The Reefermen shake the Flagstar Bank Stage to the ground. We compromise. After shuffling around the block like a herd of hungry cattle in the midst of a few thousand festival goers (ugh), I catch the last few tunes from Radiocraft (I think it was "Start Over", "Bakersfield" and "Red" - f'in excellent!) More shuffling about, more art and a brief visit to the carnival. Finally, we catch the end of Robb Roy's show (Where was John Cottos and Duane Huff???) and the beginning of The Reefermen's set.
Killa' Kim from Broadzilla is standing by the parking lot stage left with an entourage of equally dangerous looking females. I nod "hello". She gives me a look as if to say, "What the f*ck are YOU looking at?" Always nice to see Killa' Kim.
Anyway, as me and the fam were about to leave I run into Ronnie Alcini from Radiocraft. After a brief round of hey-howya-doins' and long-time-no-sees I ask him what's coming up. His answer? Radiocraft is playing at a CD Release Party for South Normal's, "No More Songs About Girls" at The Magic Bag on Friday, Oct. 28th.
Ooooooh weeeird. Ok, maybe not so weird; Radiocraft and South Normal have played together before, but this time I'm not going to miss it.
Long story short: South Normal + Radiocraft (both excellent bands with fresh material) + The Ugly Americans & Hellen @ The Magic Bag on Friday, Oct 28th = one show I don't want to miss.
See you there. - Mitch
