GUITARS & GUNS - An Unholy Union
by Keith Stover

"four dead in Ohio/four dead in Ohio,
four dead in Ohio, how many more?"
-lyrics from "Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Guitars and guns are strangely analogous, strings like triggers, notes like bullets, amplifiers the hot steel barrel of a loud report. But can the sounds issued forth by a guitar actually cause one human being to kill another?

There is little doubt that music is a catalyst for both action and change. A greeting card for all occasions, music can be a source of celebration, a call to arms, a gateway to nostalgia, or a soothing comforter.

The martial strains of Queen's 'We Will Rock You' spike our sporting events; Wagnerian marches herald the serious and studious business of the nightly news; the stately and poignant 'Candle In The Wind' or 'Gone Too Soon' accompany the tears at our funerals; 'We've Only Just Begun' underscores the joy of many wedding days. We use music like a medicine.

It is equally true that guns have shaped the history of nearly every modern civilization on earth. As agents of both expression and change, music and guns bear much in common.

Cancer Benefit January 27 at the Token Lounge in Westland.
acid_bath writes It is your friendly neighborhood original band singer Geo! I am asking all of you lovely people for a favor....your time! I am asking on behalf of me and my family to attend an original Bridge show on Thursday January 27th at the Token Lounge in Westland.

Here's the deal. I lost my mother to cancer New Years day 2003. It was a tragedy and I am still having a hard time coping! Well as the saying goes, "when it rains it pours!" My father has been diagnosed with terminal lung and colon cancer. Why play a benefit? Well when my mom passed her medical insurance went with her, so you know where I am going. All I am asking is for one night and $10.00 ...... WRIF, Real Detroit Weekly, Bullfrog Bar & Grill, US12, The LIVESTRONG Foundation, Guitar Center and many many others are putting their money where their mouths are.
