2003 Country Music Awards
|
Larry Garcia founder of DetroitCountryMusic.com
offers his take on the 2003 Country Music Awards that
aired last night on CBS. Thanks Larry for helping us out with this one.
Unless you were under a rock somewhere last night, you at least KNEW about the 37th Annual Country Music Awards that aired on CBS Wednesday Night. CBS spent a great deal of money advertising the show in every magazine, on billboards and on every conceivable TV show. From preliminary numbers, they banked correctly, the show had a phenomenal viewing audience.

DMA 2003 Part Three: Donkey Ball & Party Yak
|
by Mitch Phillips Unable to understand one word bleeding off the microphones and frustrated by humorless security guys in tight suits who won't let us anywhere near the stage, Napoleon K and I decide to go where the real action takes place - no, not the parking lot or the women's bathroom, but the State Theatre lobby. It's network central every year, where scenesters are seen and players are on parade. Oh, the drama...

DMA 2003 Part Deux: Scmooze Fest #3
|
by Mitch Phillips (continued from Part One.) Napoleon K and I finally make it inside The State Theater for the DMA awards. I pretty much know what to expect - this is my third awards show in as many years. Most people ignore the presentations (unless, of course, they've been nominated themselves ) and get right to the drinking and schmoozing. The Second City Detroit comedy troupe do their best again to entertain between award presentations, but the P.A. sound, from where I'm standing, is so dreadful that they're mostly ignored by the chattering crowd. K tells me he hasn't been to a DMA in years, but the last time he went he met Mitch Ryder and Alice Cooper (he got a picture taken with Alice which is proudly displayed in his studio). No such celebrity love tonight...

DMA 2003 Part One: Lost Again In Detroit
|
Instead of stressing myself out with a marathon writing and editing session, struggling over every detail like an anal-retentive dork, I decided to write about my 2003 Detriot Music Awards experience as it comes to me, when I feel like it, and as I please. I encourage you to do the same, but I won't hold my breath. It seems self-promotion and forums are the extent of participation on local music websites (without begging, anyway). It took us a whole year to learn that lesson and I suppose we should have known, really ( I mean, who has the time?). But I'm still daft enough to keep it up for the time being. With that in mind, here's part one of DMA 2003, "Lost Again in Detroit".

Hippiechic's tail (sic) continued. . .

HIPPIECHIC writes:
Well, at Mitch's urging I thought I'd share an update on my journey through the maze of publishing, writing, and performing from this chic's point of view. Here's a bit about the good, the bad, and what I've learned over the last few months of pursuing a music career. The Good:
Despite my battle with performance anxiety, I did manage to get together with some very cool local talent and have two of my songs recorded demo-style . . .

JOCAINE: No Piggy-Back Rides
|
Though he's been taunted on local message boards for being a Kid Rock rip-off, JOCAINE has proven he doesn't need a "Piggy Back Ride" to make things happen. The Mt. Clemens pop singer/songwriter and his band, 75 North have been outselling the competition in regional markets, filling A-rooms all over town and have managed to land on more than one Hollywood motion picture soundtrack. With his gathering momentum, there may yet be room for another red-neck pop-star from the state of Michigan. Storm Records 2002 Holiday Bash Revisited
|
Took in the Storm Records / Generation Press Holiday Bash on Dec 20th at Jacoby's in downtown Detroit featuring performances by Student Driver, Hoppin' Mad, Ruth's Hat and Caulfield. I'd been waiting almost a year to see Caulfield live after going totally nut-shit over their CD "Sleep Tight Ya Morons". It was to be a rare live performance. Rare because, as singer/songwriter Noah Shusterbauer put it, "We've just been really lazy and haven't played out all that much." Click "Read More" for Mitch's review.

Mike was doing his first gig at Van's Lounge in Dearborn when your's truly was nibbling the lead-based paint off my crib. Ty Stone: How I got a ... Record Deal
|
Detroit's own Ty Stone gives us another update on his adventures out on the left coast. Ty writes of the difficulty in making the decision that would find him alone with his guitar in LA and the events that eventually led to the first offer of a record deal. " I don't know if I'll take it or not. Who knows? I might come home next month and get 2 Days Straight back together. Clearly, my journey is definitely just beginning. . . " Click "Read More" for Ty's continuing saga.
