Survey Says: Bring Us Home
|
Though few of you commented on our survey, "Have The Wars In Iraq / Afghanistan Affected Your Music?", I'd like to bring to your attention somebody who has not only been directly affected by those wars, but who wrote a song for his son who is now serving his fourth combat tour in Iraq. He is retired military veteran David Carver and the name of his song is, "Bring Us Home".

MichiganBands.com Welcomes The Willeys
|
On behalf of Michiganbands.com, it's my pleasure to welcome The Willeys. According to their submitted link description, The Willeys play 'original music and obscure covers with a Celtic twist that has been descibed as "Folkwave" '- but you can find them here in our Original Artists/Acoustic Rock & Pop category. Formed around the nucleus of Rick & Andy Willey, the band has survived in one incarnation or another for 21 years! Their sometimes Irish alt/county vibe is burnished with enough fiddle, mandolin and bouzouki to inspire an occasional jig. But they're just as likely to break that stride with some easy going pop reminiscent of The Gin Blossoms, such as on the as yet unreleased gem "Collide" which you can find on their MySpace page. Good Solid Stuff. Check it out and report back to us. Click "read more" below for the links.

Ty Stone Announces Atlantic Deal
|
Since we lost rabble-rousing LA indie-trekker Ty Stone to Kid Rock's Top Dogg Records back in February of 2005, making him an offical nationally-released, ultra-hooked-up, rock'n R&B up-and-cummer, the graces just keep pouring the nectar on this local giant's head. Ty Stone announced on his MySpace blog that he has signed to the dream of all rock & roll dream labels, !!!!{{{{Atlantic Records}}}}!!!!. Mega congrats to Ty and everybody who worked so hard to make it happen. Ahmet Ertegun would be proud. - Mitch Click "read more" below for the announcement and a whole lotta Ty Stone links.

South Normal Calls It Quits
|
After fourteen years of beating the pavement, beating their heads against the wall, and beating a truly distinct groove in the annals of Michgian indie music, South Normal has called it quits in a MySpace blog posting dated June 7th 2007. Singer/songwriter Nathan Mackinder made the sad news official at 11:46 am, just two hours after brother/bassist Jeremy Mackinder called it quits in his own MySpace blog and two months after a dispiriting New York City label showcase where the band was dismissed with, "Frankly, its just not what we're looking for right now". Their loss. Our loss. Click "read more" for Nathan's message to their friends and fans and links to the band's website and past articles about South Normal. - Mitch

SaveNetRadio.org Needs Help Now
|
I just received an e-mail from Pandora.com founder Tim Westergren asking me to sign a petition to urge our congressional representatives to save internet radio. Recent decisions by the Copyright Royalty Board would effectively eliminate net competition to the status quo by pricing most internet radio stations out of the market. If you'd like to send a message to our so-called representatives, please Click Here To Sign The Petition. If you'd like to learn more a little more about the problem before signing, click "read more" below for a link to a recent story. Peace.
Note: A house bill has been introduced (HR 2060 -THE INTERNET RADIO EQUALITY ACT.) to save net radio. Please write your congressman and urge him/her to co-sponsor or support this legislation. Click Here To Find Out How.

Meet An Unreasonable Man: Ralph Nader @ DIA
|
It has nothing to do with local music and everything to do with political sanity (in my opinion), but I though some of you might like to know that Ralph Nader will be appearing at the Detroit Insitute of Arts film theatre for the Detroit premier of the IFC documentary, An Unreasonable Man at 7:30 pm on Thursday, April 19th. Mr. Nader will lead a discussion and field questions following the showing. The Nader organizers are also looking for help in promoting the event. Badynee's Bogdon Bass Takes World By Storm
|
About three months ago, Chris Badynee's cardboard bass made it's worldwide debut on YouTube and a half-dozen other sites including here at MB. Frustrated with his one-stringed WashTub bass, Chris created a two-stringed version made with a cardboard box and leftover construction materials from his new home. Add a few trips to the local electronics and hardware stores, some Gorilla Glue and voila!
The Bogdon Box (as it's now known) is taking the world by storm and has already attracted the attention of Good Morning America, and at least one major nationally touring Country act here in the U.S.

Cobalt Party Revolution having the Best Week Ever?
|
The Cobalt Party Revolution are having a great week and/or year. Recently, they advanced into the Semi-final round of the
Detroit News Sonic Summer competition. They perform Friday, August 4th at
the Majestic Theatre to see if they make it to the final round. Not only are they making a buzz with that but earlier this year an early demo of theirs was
used in a widely popular
Quiznos sub commercial, thus exposing the bands unique sound to millions.
This caught the attention of several advertising agencies, one of which asked the
band to write music for the movie.... Click "read more" below

South Normal Meets The 3-Headed Evil Genius
|
It doesn’t happen often, but every once in a while I manage to escape my working-class container and venture out among people who are doing something productive with their lives. In this case, I went to Frog Island Park (where there are no frogs and there is no island) to witness South Normal draft Suzie Ferro to lip-sync for a three-headed Evil Genius who's been hired to sell new & used cars to the young and hip in Colorado. Huh? Click “read more” below for an exhaustive account with lots of pics. - Mitch
