| Vietnam Prom Review: selections from MP3.com |
|
Editor, reviewer and gonzo writing machine Mitch Phillips introduces you to (or revisits, depending on your perspective) Vietnam Prom. Though they fancy themselves time travelers, this band's unique sense of psycho-depressive realism is sufficiently available in the present...
'Vietnam Prom's music is experiential reality stripped of hope and aspiration then injected with narcotics to aid the nihilistic urge to disappear from this creation.'

| ''Sleep Tight Ya Morons'' May be Power-Pop Classic |
|
Artist: Caulfield
Release: sleep tight, ya morons
Label: Storm Records
review by Mitch Phillips
With the release of Caufield's, "...sleep tight, ya morons," Storm Records out of Royal Oak, MI may have a power-pop classic on their hands. Featuring twelve tracks of intense, adrenalized rock for disaffected youth or anybody else with an attitude and some energy to burn, Caulfield has captured the genre better than any other act I've heard this year with their smart lyrics, hyper-agressive performances and hook-sharp songwriting.

Band - Sugartalk
Play Song - Leave
Sugartalk mixes solid pop craftsmanship with a comfortable rock formula and throws in some new recording tricks for good measure on "Leave". This song is so listenable it's bound to show up on your home-cooked CD compilation of favorite local tracks. But "caveat surfor", dear web animal - this sample ends abruptly at three minutes and ten seconds, leaving you begging for some closure. Judging from the quality of this extra-long sample, I think I can say Sugartalk's latest CD "Go With It" is a safe buy. - Mitch

| Random Reviews: Perpetual Hype Engine |
|
Although Perpetual Hype Engine list Zeppelin and Floyd as influences (facetiously, I'd guess) "Unpacified," from their 1999 release entitled, "CyberChrist," is more reminiscent of Ministry's "Stigmata"; the music is fast, violent, psychotic and disturbed and the lyrics are delivered via
throaty shouts and growls. Perpetual Hype Engine have refined the
"scream-band" technique (a style too-often heard from young white males in the Detroit area) to an art form, making them the only band I've heard that can pull it off convincingly. Combining guitar-crunching metal with stark electronic embellishments, PHE creates a sonic landscape fraught with dangers or thrills depending on your perspective. This is musical testosterone plugged into a 640v transformer while standing in a puddle of your own piss.
I've heard a lot about Perpetual Hype Engine in the two years I've volunteered for michigangaritsts.com, specifically that they are one of the most exciting live bands in Detroit. Is it true, or is it Hype Engine? You be the judge.

artist: Fuze
song - Complicated Man
Think we only do rock, pop and hip hop? Then you've never heard of FUZE, an extrememly talented jazz fusion band out of Southfield, MI. Listing Steely Dan, Jeff Beck, Santana, Frank Zappa, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Return to Forever, Medeski Martin & Wood, Liquid Soul, and Morphine as influences, Fuze borrows from all these amazing artiists to create musician's music of the first caliber. "Complicated Man," from their 1998 release entitled "Blown," reminds me of Al Dimeola's work in the eighties. Good stuff if you're a guitar freak or just a bandhead who appreciates quality musicianship.

Artist - Section One
Song - Make No Mistake
Smashcore brats Section One from Lansing prove that there must be a collective unconscious as Carl Jung professed almost a hundred years ago. What other explanation could there be for this band sounding exactly like a thousand other bands I've had the misfortune of hearing? Ok, ok. It's angry, it's loud, it's "bassy," it's what happens when you piss-off a whole generation of young men by pretending they don't exist. So ROOOOOOOAAAAAR!!!!!!
