| Music Review: ''The Real You'' by Chris McCall |
Almost a year to the month after he'd first received a copy of Chris McCall's debut EP "The Real You", Editor Mitch Phillips probably has the distinction of being the very last one to review this slick seven-track release. He writes... 'Now I've got three CD's, two promo packages...and the guilt of an entire year weighing on my conscience (You dropped the ball, boy-o). I pushed her CD to the front of my list.' | Music Review: The Process ''Blood and Bones'' |
In the face of a probable war with Iraq, it's fitting to come across a CD with a political point of view that dissents from American realpolitik. "Blood & Bones" by The Process (their eighth full length release since '91's "Mystery Babylon") is thought-provoking in it's politics, reverent in it's spiritualilty and contagious in it's Jah-makin' back-beat. Editor Mitch Phillips goes off on a political bent in another one of his long reviews. Three song samples included. Click "Read More" below.

| Music Review: ''The Upstairs Chronicles'' by Almost Famous |
Almost Famous may not win a Grammy Award for their CD, "The Upstairs Chronicles", but they get my vote for "Most Patience With an Online Indie Publication While Awaiting a Stupid Review" (I'm afraid to even look at the post-mark on that envelope). In any case, this eight-song debut is the result of the trio's foray into pop music while matriculating at The University of Michigan - that liberal bastion of affirmative action and war protestations that I would donate my kidneys to attend. Is my envy showing? On to the review...

| Review: Tangent (self-titled ep) |
Shifting gears away from the alt-country for a while (a much needed move for freshening my ears), I spent a few days listening to Tangent's four-song, self-titled ep. What I thought might be a vanity record from yet another hard-rock band who claims to have a 'groove unmatched in the local music scene' actually turned out to have some meat on it. It never pays to pre-judge a record, no matter what I think I know. Click "Read More" for the review and sound samples. - Mitch

| Review: Jill Jack's 'The Love Hotel' |
I have so many local CD's waiting for reviews, some discs sit for months before I get to them. So I'm grateful guitarist / producer Billy Brandt e-mailed to remind me I had a copy of Jill Jack's "The Love Hotel" somewhere - because I didn't know exactly where it was. I searched my office, my CD collection and the stacks of discs piled on around my computer and eventually found it hiding in the map bin of my truck - where it's been sitting since last June! How embarrassing! So, without further ado - please enjoy this review of Jill Jack's "The Love Hotel" complete with sound samples and a track by track analysis. Click "Read More" below. - Mitch

| SurReal-finally something real |
ponygrrl writes " I just recieved SurReal's CD and I was absolutely floored when I heard them. The very first song began to play and I was hooked. I cant believe how great they sounded-and this cd was just their first little thing recorded. If this is what they sound like with barely any time to record, and a very sick singer-I cant wait until they get back into the studio and release more. Definately keep an eye out for them, they truely have talent and I am happy to say that I am Hooked on something SurReal."

| Review: Hydrophonic's ''ORBITS'' |
"Orbits" by Hydrophonic is probably the most ambitious local recording I've come across in recent years. It's a thematic work with one track dedicated to each of the nine planets in our solar system. Oh, and two more tracks for the Sun and the Moon. And one for the asteroid belt. Uh, and another one for Triton, which is a moon of Neptune. Well, I guess nine whole planets wasn't enough cosmic fodder for this prolific Lansing-based project. Click "Read More" for the review and important show information.

| Blue Tail Fly: ''...cheap-ass sampler |
Having received plenty of swag from the heavy-mental trio BLUE TAIL FLY and their fearless leader Swipsey, we figured we they long overdue for a review. '(BTF's) music is unusual, interesting, twisted and hard. Swipesy's guitar work doesn't crunch like typical metal - but screams like a mental banshee.'
Though this particular sampler isn't available to the public, we're giving away a couple BTF discs to worthy beggars who can use the "Comment" button. Click "Read More" for the review and details on the giveaway.

| Review: Downtown Brown ''Moist & Ridiculous'' |
Now that you've read every other review of Downtown Brown's "Moist & Ridiculous" and concluded that everybody loves this band , you can read Mitch's ornery diatribe.
'Downtown Brown is the musical equivalent of "Jackass". - an extremely popular entertainment phenomena, but a worrisome omen for our cultural mental-health.' Click "Read More" for a basic review, a critique and track by track highlights.

| Review of The Wrenfields' Seconds |
Mitch finally cuddles up to The Wrenfields' sophomore release entitled, "Seconds" - once he got over his aversion to the "C-word", that is.
'...despite my hip discomfort with anything that might inspire line-dancing (ugh), "Seconds" has become a warm and welcome companion to my holiday season, when such sentiments seem perfectly appropriate. '
Click "Read More" to find why you should get a heapin' helpin' of "Seconds" for yourself. Don't worry, you can work it off before spring - just like you did last year, right?
