I dropped by Kozy Koffee in Highland Michigan last Thursday and shot some video of the performances then made a short montage out of it so you would get a feel for their Open Mic Night. The show started around 7pm with some impromptu drum, guitar & keyboard music then moved on to several solo & duo performances. There was a decent-sized younger crowd at this place who were occassionally inspired to get up and get freaky. Click the video to the left to check it out.

| When Life Gets Tough, Get Your Muruga On |
Now that our so-called representatives have sold us down the river and we'll be renting refrigerator boxes from JPMorgan Chase well into the future, the need for musical escapism is more important that ever. So on a randomized safari through our band links section I thought it particularly serendipitous to discover the music of Muruga & The Global Village Ceremonial Band in our Original Artists/World & Ethnic Music category. The leading track on Muruga's Amie St. web page, "Rock The Planet", has that bizarro P-Funk vibe, like you drank way too much cheap wine and wandered into a block party in some forgotten corner of Detroit and you don't care if you ever get home. The kind of vibe that gives you permission to smoke whatever is passed to you in a circle of strangers. That kinda vibe. The best part - you can get five of Muruga's funky surreal sonic-scapes on Aime St.for just $1.10 and that's better than a bag full of sliders after a night on 8 Mile - and you don't even have to go there. | Last Chance To Solve The MB Puzzler |
Several months ago I added a members-only feature called the MB Puzzler on the right hand column of this website. Well, apparently, our members are much too busy with their music careers to be bothered with such trifles as word games, right? So out of the goodness of my heart, I'm opening up the puzzler to anybody who cares to solve it. Click "read more" below, solve the band-name anagram, find the secret link, solve the puzzle and win prizes! Well, the first two who send me the correct answers to the puzzler will get some free music. Are you up to the challenge? - Mitch

| Who's Got A Golden God? Ain't Tellin. |
One of the highlights we caught at the Metro Music Expo was the performance of one of the Fox Rocks 2008 finalists, Garden City's AYNTELLYN (pronouced Ain't Tellin' - ed: do you know how hard it is to find a band on the internet when they get fancy with the spelling?). Of particular interest were the lead vocals as delivered by Dino Johnson. Johnson has been blessed with the golden locks and a golden baritone that screams CLASSIC ROCK! - which should make them a shoe-in for the grand prize - an opening slot for Lynard Skynard at DTE on September 21st, 2008. In fact, Johnson's voice is such a draw that even when he sang karaoke at the DJ's Pro Audio booth he drew a sizable crowd.

Note: UPDATE: ****Ayntellyn WINS!!!**** the Fox Rocks 2008 Battle Of The Bands and will go on to open for Lynard Skynard!

| National Ghost's Ice Cream Head Added To MB Videos |
Spent a couple of days at the Metro Music Expo this weekend and took in a bunch of live performances, including Graham Strachan's latest project National Ghost which performed on the Lounge Stage this past Sunday afternoon. They played a bunch of selections off their forthcoming debut which is slated for release at Jacoby's on November 1st - so mark your calendars. One particular song they performed, a little ska ditty called "Ice Cream Head", is a bona fide ear worm that has infected our household ever since I recorded it on video (pls forgive the camera work). Click the pic for the vid or click "read more" below for all the pertinent links.

Hey bandheads, didn't think you'd ever hear from me again, eh? What's that? You don't care? Tsk, tsk, you should get so much attention. Well, I felt the whim to submit some new MBlurbs for your perusal. Oh, feel free to submit your own - that offer has only been available since 2001 so if you haven't yet contributed, you can take that as a hint.
In this edition of MBlurbs we'll be covering Liz Larin's foray into avante garde with New Music Detroit, Kitty Donohoe's attempt to levitate The Pentagon with her 9/11 music, Nadir's dose of tear gas courtesy of the Republican National Convention, National Ghost's latest attempt to acheive validation at the MME, Chris McCall's extra-musical "Contact" in Ypsi and finally, Radar Pilot's national health care policy - since nobody else seems to have one that works. Click "read more" below for the 411. - Mitch
