Fox Rocks Winner Announced and Questioned
Fox 2 Detroit just announced the winner of their My Fox Rocks battle of the bands. The Matt Austin Band has been chosen to open up for Def Leppard and Styx at DTE on Tuesday, July 24th. Austin beat out hundreds of local bands from the metro Detroit area including some of our favorites. Coincidentally (or not), it was also announced that The Matt Austin Band was chosen to compete in Simon Cowell's new Fox franchise "The Next Great American Band" - which leads this cynic to question the validity of the contest. I know there will probably be some "sour grapes" comments from the lucky winners, the Fox producers and even Austin's fans (we're certainly not saying they don't deserve the shot - sounds like a decent band), but do you believe the results of this particular contest were pre-determined as a local promotional vehicle for The Next Great American Band? Does it matter? Vote in our latest survey and please feel free to chime in with your comments below.

Click "read more" for a link to The Matt Austin Band's myspace page and the interview that ran on Fox this morning.

Survey Says: Should Restaurants and Bars Ban Smoking?
In a recent e-mail, singer/songwriter Chris McCall made a plea to her fans. She writes:
Please consider writing to your representative in support of House Bill 4163 which proposes smoke free environments for all work sites, including bars and restaurants which are now exempt. Even if you smoke, I ask you to support this effort as so many of us who work in these environments face health problems and lost wages as a direct result of second-hand smoke. Although similar laws have passed in many countries and states, it has been said that it will never pass in Michigan. Please help. You can find out more at www.makemiairsmokefree.org My deepest thanks.

This prompts our latest MB Survey: Should smoking be banned in Michigan bars and restaurants? Vote in the right column or click here. As always, feel free to comment at the voting booth.

Have The Bush Wars Affected Your Music?
Well, it's been four years, over 3500 Americans dead, tens of thousands wounded, millions of Iraqis displaced or otherwise disposed of, hundreds of billions of YOUR tax dollars wasted and there's still no end in sight. The Vulcan's war in Iraq and Afghanistan and the greater War On {{TERROR}} haven't exactly gone as planned (or have they, Dick?) and even die-hard Repulicons (sic) are now showing signs of pre-election war fatigue.
Several national musical acts have stepped up to the plate with their own war songs (Neil Young, Green Day, Dixie Chicks, etc..) but what about right here in southeast Michigan? Have the Bush Wars affected your songwriting? Your shows? Your attitude? Please take our latest poll (located on right column) and please leave a comment (located at bottom of results page) as well. - Mitch

 Survey Says: Nothin' Means Nothin'
As it turns out in our latest survey, failing success in the music business, only about 1.5 percent of you will adapt and pursue another venue to achieve fame and fortune. About 3 percent say you will burn out on drugs and alcohol and about the same number will either become politicians, or do the more honorable thing and kill themselves (in which case we hope they're kidding). Click "read more" below for more fascinating statistics.

Survey: Who would you rather have rate your performance?
Since the entire country is on the edge of their seat tonight waiting to find out who the next American Idol will be, I wondered how my favorite bands might fare in front of the dynamic trio - Paula, Randy and the infamous Simon Cowell. If you had to choose, who would you rather rate your performance in front of a national audience?

Click here to take our latest survey.

Would you bare a breast for success?
Some people were offended, some didn't think it was a big deal, but one fact is indisputable - the premeditated exposure of Janet Jackson's bare breast has had the media talking about her and Justin Timberlake for more than a week. Congressional hearings on decency in the media is sure to keep that buzz alive for at least another week. Stunts like these (e.g. Madonna and Britney Spears' tongue-sucking on national t.v.) are becoming more common. Why? Because controvesy translates into increased sales. Our latest survey asks, "Would you bare a breast for success?"

American Idol .. The Winner is ...

As you probably know by now, the winner of this years American Idol contest is Ruben Studdard with a slim margin of a little over 1,000 votes over Clay Akin.

But the real story may be that Detroit's own Impaler matched Studdard vote for vote in the Michigan Bands readers pole as of the conclusion of the Fox broadcast.  Clay "Shakin'" Akin received only 15% of the vote.

You would have to admit that it would be pretty cool to have a 400+  year old  vampire represent Detroit and Michigan in next years competition. Dr. Impaler's harem could teach Simon a little respect overday ...
