Mitch's Mind: How Artwork Changes Music

Chain Reaction - Electric PlaygroundRecently, the Detroit band Chain Reaction reminded me of the importance of album art with their latest release, Electric Playground. The cover art (at left) was designed by New York artist Richard Klemann. It's just the kind of album cover I would have loved as a kid - so many details to peruse.

That was my favorite pastime growing up in the 70's; whiling away the hours listening to music, locked in my room with a pair of headphones while I poured over every detail of the cover art.  I consumed everything on the inner sleeve and all the credits as well. It was an essential part of the listening experience for me.

 Lest We Forget.....There's Always YouTube!
It's been four years since the war in Iraq began and for most people, that's plenty long enough to become fatigued from daily reports of military and civilian deaths and destruction. Psychologically, we'd rather ignore or avoid the details when we can. It's just too much to process. Hell, I'd bet that many of us cant even remember how we got into this damn war. Well for those who can't, we have a treat for you - courtesy of our "friends" over at HarRockDetroit.com who posted this YouTube video in their forum. I think it bears repeating....Click "read more" below to check it out.

Mitch's Mind: The U.S. vs John Lennon
I just watched the U.S. vs John Lennon on DVD and it made me sad. It made me sad for my country because we're suffering the same kind of nightmare again. It made me sad for the ignorance of our so-called leaders (both past and present), the fear that ignorance produces, and the violence that fear ultimately unleashes on innocent people both at home and abroad. I actually got choked up at one point during this DVD, not because I was sad actually, but because I thought it was really beautiful (can real men use that word?) that John Lennon was able to inspire such noble tendencies in so many people at once with songs lilke "All You Need Is Love","Revolution", "Working Class Hero", "Give Peace A Chance", "Happy Christmas (War Is Over If You Want It) "Gimme Some Truth", "Instant Karma" and on and on.

Mitch's Mind: Don't Get That Same Tattoo
So I'm stripping the paint of the old front door and I break out the iPod, put it on shuffle, skip a few tracks, then hear "Tattoo" from Chelsea Michigan's South Normal.

Don't get that butterfly / tattoo upon your thigh
I know that other guys / might think your sexy
the same as every girl that has the same tattoo

It's such a great song that's all it takes to get me to listen to the entirety of "Emotion Picture" and "No More Songs About Girls" while I scrape paint.

Serendipity, Synchronicity Lead Me Back to The Bag
A couple months ago I took a trip to the MB Geocache to replace some CD's that had been damaged by rain. Apparently, a curious raccoon or some other varmint opened the cache and spread its contents throughout the woods while looking for something good to eat.
When I got to the cache, I cleaned it up, removed the damaged discs, replaced them with new ones and hiked back to my truck.
Originally, I intended to dispose of the damaged CD's . . .

To be or not to be?
Dear Bandheads,
In my ongoing struggle to become a better human, I quit smoking on November 1st after twenty-one years of a pack-and-a-half-per-day habit. Big, fat, hairy deal, right?
Well, this fundamental change in my brain chemistry has temporarily (I hope) altered my ability to do anything productive. It seems silly, unless you've been there, that such a positive change for your health should have such a debilitatinig effect on your brain...

 VooDoo Takes Out Editor's Instrument
I know some of you out there are wondering, "Hey, what the hell is up with Mitch? Where's my story? Where's my ad? Where's my Hassen-Pheffer?" Bad mojo has infected your editor's finger, then his hand, who know's what next. Truth is, I shouldn't even be typing - doctor's orders. If it aint better by tomorrow or the next day, hospital bed. See what happens when you make a hobby of dis'n some artiste's heartfelt trash? VooDoo Revenge. With any luck I'll be back in the pink by next week. With my usual luck, they'll be calling me "Lefty" and I'll have to learn to masturbate all over again. Sorry for the delays all around. Now go write me some GEMS, I'm hungry. - Mitch
