| NXNE 2008: MUSIC FANS UNITE IN CANADA by Sue Static |
Toronto, CA - For the past fourteen years, the second week of June has seen music industry biz kids; aspiring bands and music fans make their yearly trek to Toronto for the North by Northeast Music & Film Festival and Conference, Canada’s answer to Austin’s venerable South by Southwest. NXNE provides a music conference with music showcases, networking parties and an indie film festival which has become a great place to check out new artists and films and also learn something in the process.
This year's festival was the best one yet and drew a record number of attendees and bands. I’ve been attending the festival since the second year of its existence and it has become an annual destination of mine. The showcases feature indie and veteran bands from across Canada, select cities in the U.S. and from around the globe.

| Box Bass Featured Best In Show At Summer NAMM '08 |
We are deliriously happy to report that Chris Badynee's Bogdon Box Bass was featured as Best In Show at the Summer NAMM 2008 in Nashville, TN! Born from the frustration of never having enough cash lying around to buy his own double-bass, Badynee created his own functional bass out of a cardboard box, a piece of wood trim, some weed-whipping twine, a few screws and some glue. Next he uploaded a video of himself playing his creation on YouTube and the video went viral. Local and major media latched on and the rest is history. We'd like to send a hearty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! out to Chris and we wish him all the success in the world. Now start folding those boxes Badynee!

The first thing you notice when you cue up "Working Man" on Union Avenue's MySpace page is that this band lives deep in the pocket - which is a very satisfying place to be. The next thing you notice is the exquisite guitar work of Lenny Earls (we're told the son of legendary Sun Records 1950’s recording artist Jack Earls). Finally, you notice your foot is tapping, your head is bobbing and your body's wervin' to the funky rhythm of "Catfish" - which nearly has you out of your chair. By the time "All Your Loving" rolls on out you've made up your mind to go see this band live because it's been much too long since you've gone out dancing - and you just know the serious blues dancers are going to be following these guys around (you know, the ones with the white patent-leather shoes, the button-down, long-sleeve shirts with contrasting checkered polyester slacks circa-1970 and the ladies in any dress that accentuates their twirl). But even if you're not a fan of the blues, don't you forget to bring your dancin' shoes because Union Avenue can nail rock, reggae and country too.

| MB Welcomes The Whiskey Rhythm Band |
I don't know about you bandheads out there, but when I was gigging regularly I couldn't get my groove on without '...a taste born of hoary nights....the boldly flavorful yet surprisingly smooth spirit of Yukon Jack...' - or Southern Comfort, or Jeigermeister, or some other type of flammable liquer that was both sweet and dangerous when consumed in large quantities. Whiskey Rhythm is both the perfect description for that subtle state between stiff sobriety and alcoholic meltdown and our latest band-link submission in the Cover Bands / Classic Rock category. This Battle Creek quartet also play a fair amount of blues, so they can re-submit their link in our Cover Bands / Blues category as well. If you're lost in southern Michigan sometime or just need a stiff drink before you go to Ohio, look 'em up. For now, click "read more" below for the link.

| Badynee's Bogdon Bass In The Freep |
Chris Badynee's Bogdon Box Bass has made the news again, this time right here at home in The Freep. The local musician/inventor has been peddling his wares in every available media outlet, including Bass Player Magazine, Good Morning America, on the Dwight Yokum tour with Jake Willemain, at the N.A.M.M. show out west and soon at the N.A.M.M show down in Nashville. According to The Freep he's already unloaded 500 of the cardboard contraptions at $99 bucks a pop via mail-order and more are selling all the time. Not a bad segue from his life as a sideman for The Purple Gang, The Cadillac Kidz, Pas/Cal, Skeleton Crew, Laffing Gas and many others.

| Emergenza Showcase Review by Severance |
-severance- writes "Emergenza is a annual musical showcase that claims to be searching for the best unsigned band in the world. They talk a big game and even look legit on face value. You submit a $70 fee to get in and they come back and supply you with strings and drum sticks. It's a showcase that is sponsored by Sony, Mapex, D'addario etc.. With bands competing in over 20 different nations for the "chance" to play in front of record label A&Rs
The problem a lot of bands had with the competition and I'm speaking on behalf of Severance, This Last Breath and Stereotipikal (all Detroit finalists) - Emergenza failed to live up to what it originally set out to do. First, they set ridiculous ticket prices, $15 a ticket. They kept all the money from ticket sales for themselves - not paying a single band for crowd they brought in or their performances. We're talking about pocketing a good $5000+ per show. Emergenza also did not promote the show in any way shape or form. Hell, bands had to even pay to get into the parking lot for their own show!
