Larry McCray To Host Blues Jam
saxsymbol writes

Rubes Booze and Blueshas long hosted an open mic blues jam on Mondays. This information often elicits no more than a perfunctory yawn from the music community. Recently, however, the host band for this little musical adventure has been none othe than Mr. Blues is my business (and business is good) Larry McCray.

 Liz Larin / N.U.D.E.
Normally I wouldn't spend my Friday night in a coffee house getting jacked on capuccinos, but the opportunity to see Liz Larin / N.U.D.E. was too much to resist. Larin performed with Robert Tye for the New Union Dance & Electronica CD Release Party at Xhedos Cafe in Ferndale. She appears on track 14 of the compilation with a song called "Want you, don't need you" - you can hear a Real Audio sample here.

 ''Roll On'' Robb Roy
All that touring over the past year promoting their "Happy" CD must have gotten to Robb Roy who've worked those road-demons out in their brand new single "Roll On" (now available for download at RobbRoy.com ). This tune is no less than you'd expect from Michigan's rock standard-bearers; solid pop hooks with, this time, crossover appeal and a taste of sentimentality for the greatest country in the world. The brand new track features multi-DMA award winner Jill Jack on backing vocals and the passionate Pat Brennan laying down a soulful blanket of ivory-keyed organ. Robb Roy is currently writing and recording at "The Cleaners" in Dearborn ( it was literally a dry cleaning business before bassist John Cottos re-fashioned it into a down-time studio) and are rolling on towards a new full-length album.

 Age Survey Results
The overwhelming majority of you who responded to our "When did you start playing music?" poll (49 percent) started playing music the same time those llittle curly hairs showed up, between 11-15 years old. I only wish those same 35 respondents would occassionally comment on a story or submit to our forums section. In order to get a better understanding of user apathy around here (except for the polls - maybe we need more button-clicking interaction here), take a moment to respond to our new poll, "I don't submit (articles, comments) to Michiganbands.com because..." - Mitch

The White Stripes Infect Local Online Editor
The White Stripes are spreading like a viral meme and I'm their latest host. I don't know what's come over me but I've been spreading this virus every time I open my mouth to talk about music, intentionally infecting my unsuspecting friends and acquaintences. It's sick, I know. I'm sure with a little bed rest and plenty of fluids I'll be right-as-rain in a few weeks, but for now I can only cough-up infectious accolades for the band that, in my fevered condition, I believe saved rock 'n roll.

If a dog were my teacher ...

I'd like to welcome you to a new topic called Rick's Mind. Occasionally I find myself thinking about things that "kind of" apply to music, but may not fit into a category exactly. I will use this topic to post such ramblings.

Today's offering is a little thing that I ran across somewhere called "If a dog were your teacher".

Music is a lot more than just something that we do. It is a life style. I thought that this was appropriate.

May 2002 - That Vintage Sound
Our noble webmaster Rick has asked me a pretty good question to start things off for my first monthly article about guitar-related stuff. Rick asks: What makes a 1959 Les Paul sound different than a new one - or what makes any vintage guitar sound "better"?
If you'd like to respond, please take it over to the "Go-To-Guy" Forum where you'll find my own little guitar corner where you can post and say whatever you want!
