New MichiganMusicians.com website Launched!
wiki writes:
So we finally opened our doors late last night to our brand new website for Michigan musicians/bands & fans of local music. I have decided to use xoops to power MM this time as it is my favorite open source cms out there. It has given me the possibility to add some new modules to the site that we have lacked in the past such as an image gallery were our members can upload photos, an inline forum to replace our former remotely hosted proboards forum, a callsifieds module, a module for members to submit and watch YouTube videos of local bands, blogs, reviews, an events module for submitting shows, an online store for artists/bands to sell their music on our site, and best of all a module that allows artists/bands to create a band page.

The Ghost That Walks Reverses Time, Bears Fruit
Inspired by the amount of time he was wasting on the internet, electronic underground musician Paul "Ghostwalker" Bishop has committed himself to a once-a-week composition series that is intended to last an entire year.

"After wasting so much time in the last two years, not to mention the last ten. I decided to do something about it and pull my finger out of my arse. One track a week it is then," Bishop wrote in his DetroitCity.com blog.

He began his productivity turnaround simply by flipping his daily routine into reverse. Instead of working on music after looking at websites, articles, myspace, facebook, etc.. he made it the first thing he did in his day. The result is five compositions in five weeks so far, with 48 more to go (apparently including two weeks of well-earned vacation). Click "read more" below.

Survey Says: Should Restaurants and Bars Ban Smoking?
In a recent e-mail, singer/songwriter Chris McCall made a plea to her fans. She writes:
Please consider writing to your representative in support of House Bill 4163 which proposes smoke free environments for all work sites, including bars and restaurants which are now exempt. Even if you smoke, I ask you to support this effort as so many of us who work in these environments face health problems and lost wages as a direct result of second-hand smoke. Although similar laws have passed in many countries and states, it has been said that it will never pass in Michigan. Please help. You can find out more at www.makemiairsmokefree.org My deepest thanks.

This prompts our latest MB Survey: Should smoking be banned in Michigan bars and restaurants? Vote in the right column or click here. As always, feel free to comment at the voting booth.

MBlurbs: July 4, 2007
Welcome to another edition of MBlurbs. This time we catch up with Radiocraft at the Stars & Stripes fest in Mt. Clemens, just in time for tear-down. Ronnie gives me the 311 on Joey Bowen's return from the left-coast and the General Clusterfunk reunion. Jay informs us that it's a Blind Shame that band doesn't exist anymore, but three-fifths of a broken-ass band make for a Bulletproof Moxie.

Happy Independence Day Bandheads
Happy Independence Day Michigan Bandheads! Today we celebrate not just our break with Great Britain some 231 years ago, but our independence from all forms of tyranny and oppression, including those imposed on us and all peace-loving people by violent political ideologies and religions. We'll declare our independence from the shortsightedness of the FCC for not insisting on more local programming and local music on the public airwaves. We'll declare our independence from the global economy which continues to export our jobs and drag our standard of living into the toilet. We'll celebrate the independent spirit that is manifest through local independent music. We'll affirm a new dedication to localism, starting with the music performances we attend. With that said, check our calendar for an event near you or, better yet, submit one of your own. - Mitch

MBlurbs: June 28, 2007
Welcome to the second editon of MBlurbs, in which we glean from your e-mails the local music news of the day. In this edition, singer/songwriter Graham Strachan has been busy making sense of his life without Robb Roy. Classical-Rock keyboardist and local celeb-brother Michael Quatro hired an "Animal" to spice-up his riverboat shows and Muskegon's Four Finger Five have found greener pastures up in the northwest.
Remember, If you want your news included in future editions of MBlurbs, put us on your e-mail list.

Mitch's Mind: The U.S. vs John Lennon
I just watched the U.S. vs John Lennon on DVD and it made me sad. It made me sad for my country because we're suffering the same kind of nightmare again. It made me sad for the ignorance of our so-called leaders (both past and present), the fear that ignorance produces, and the violence that fear ultimately unleashes on innocent people both at home and abroad. I actually got choked up at one point during this DVD, not because I was sad actually, but because I thought it was really beautiful (can real men use that word?) that John Lennon was able to inspire such noble tendencies in so many people at once with songs lilke "All You Need Is Love","Revolution", "Working Class Hero", "Give Peace A Chance", "Happy Christmas (War Is Over If You Want It) "Gimme Some Truth", "Instant Karma" and on and on.

Mitch's Mind: Don't Get That Same Tattoo
So I'm stripping the paint of the old front door and I break out the iPod, put it on shuffle, skip a few tracks, then hear "Tattoo" from Chelsea Michigan's South Normal.

Don't get that butterfly / tattoo upon your thigh
I know that other guys / might think your sexy
the same as every girl that has the same tattoo

It's such a great song that's all it takes to get me to listen to the entirety of "Emotion Picture" and "No More Songs About Girls" while I scrape paint.

Drew 32 To Perform @ Hart Plaza
drew32 writes:
15-year old rapper Drew 32 is going to be performing at the Rhythm & Rhymes from the Hart Festival at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit, on Wednesday, June 27th, 2007 @ 8:00 PM. The Rhythm and Rhymes Fest is the artistic prelude to the Target Fireworks Celebration that will cap the 6-day Detroit International River Days celebration. The Rhythm and Rhymes from the Hart Festival is sponsored by AM 910 Radio Disney - which selected me to perform. Also on stage will be B-Smooth who can be heard on Drew's CD "Awakening" on track 10 ("Twisted"). So check it out by coming to the show at 8:00 or watching it on TV (i'm thinking it's gonna be broadcasted - at least some parts) and just be one of the hundreds of thousands of people there. Lol. Check it out. Click "read more" below for a link to Drew32's MySpace page

MichiganBands.com Welcomes The Willeys
On behalf of Michiganbands.com, it's my pleasure to welcome The Willeys. According to their submitted link description, The Willeys play 'original music and obscure covers with a Celtic twist that has been descibed as "Folkwave" '- but you can find them here in our Original Artists/Acoustic Rock & Pop category. Formed around the nucleus of Rick & Andy Willey, the band has survived in one incarnation or another for 21 years! Their sometimes Irish alt/county vibe is burnished with enough fiddle, mandolin and bouzouki to inspire an occasional jig. But they're just as likely to break that stride with some easy going pop reminiscent of The Gin Blossoms, such as on the as yet unreleased gem "Collide" which you can find on their MySpace page. Good Solid Stuff. Check it out and report back to us.
