| Merry Christmas Michigan Bands |
|
First
of all Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All.
I have to pass along a little holiday cheer, appropriately in the form of
Michigan Indie Christmas Music.
Earlier this week I was in a little market in Brighton and noticed they were
selling some local bands CDs. One was titled "Holy Knight" by a guy
simply called Arlen. It was going for six bucks with the
proceeds being donated to Toys For Tots. That was enough for me and I wanted
to add some local Christmas music to my collection so I picked it up without
really looking it over.
When I got home I put the CD in my computer and was absolutely blown away. I
quickly opened it up to see who this guy was, and he was the former lead singer
of Salem Witchcraft, Arlen Viecelli. I hadn't made the connection.
We had run an article some time back when Arlen was singing lead for the
reformation of Frigid Pink.
Listen to "What
Child Is This?" from the CD.

| Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts |
|
The destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina in nearly unfathomable. It is
human nature when faced with a task as great as the one at hand to postpone
action. This can not be an option. All of us need to take a part, no mater how
small, in helping the victims of this tragedy.
I've set up a link box on the right that accepts donations for the Salvation
Army. 100% of the donation goes to Katrina victims. The donation link was
"barrowed" from WJR.com (ABC Radio Detroit).
Local bands have already stepped up and are organizing fundraisers for the
victims of Katrina. Kudos to all. If you are planning a relief benefit for
Katrina victims be sure to let us know so we can post it. Special thanks
to GT-Bass of Funkilinium for putting together a comprehensive list of
organizations that are accepting donations of time and money. Click on Read

| Just Trying To Help A Friend |

My neighbor is looking for a new home for his puppy.
It's a Dachshund, it's house broken, and it's great with kids. He's giving it away because his wife says the dog "stares" at her when she is undressing. If you're interested, or know someone who is, let me know.

Need
a little Christmas music to get in the mood? First I would suggest picking
up a copy of "Season
of Hope". The proceeds go for Leukemia research. The CD
features lots of Michigan indie artists, including Robb Roy doing "Happy
Christmas" and Thornetta Davis doing "Boggie Woggie Santa
Clause". If that's not enough, many other notables grace the
CD. There is even a bit on there from Ernie Harwell.
Ok, you want something for free first right??? Here you go. Drop
over to grab some of Nicholas
Palmer's music on MP3.com. I can hear it now ... Nicholas
Who???? Mr. P is one bad piano player from GR. This is really mellow
stuff that won't offend your grand mother. Nicholas has just been
"signed" to provide charts for none other than MusicNotes.com
an internet based sheet music provider. They also happen to be one of our
"sponsors". Pretty big time stuff considering that they rarely
seek out someone to contribute like this. Mr. P got the call directly from
the CEO.
If you have some Christmas tunes you want to share. Drop us a line and
let us know about them. Tis the season ...

| A little nostalgia please |
|
Recently, I was doing a little internet surfing when I found an excerpt from a book called
"Local DJ: A Rock and Roll History". The book was written by Peter C.
Cavanaugh, an old acquaintance of mine from "back in the day".
Pete was a little more than just a DJ. He also was a concert promoter. One of the best at his craft of any that I've ever had the privilege of knowing. A very smart man that supported Michigan talent, like the MC5
and Stooges while facing the threat of law suits or even jail time for his beliefs.
I've seen a lot of discussion lately about the Detroit "Music Scene", or lack there of. Maybe this will enlighten some as to the goings on at that time (circa late 60's to early 70's) when the Detroit Scene was a major force and history was being made.

| If a dog were my teacher ... |
|
|
I'd like to welcome you to a new topic called Rick's
Mind. Occasionally I find myself thinking about things that "kind
of" apply to music, but may not fit into a category exactly. I will
use this topic to post such ramblings.
Today's offering is a little thing that I ran across
somewhere called "If a dog were your teacher".
Music is a lot more than just something that we
do. It is a life style. I thought that this was appropriate.
