You're right, of course, Grace. I don't really hold it against you that you got a well-paying gig. My feathers are just fine, thanks. We do what we have to do to pay the bills, even if it means doing a gig that is, as you put it 'not my scene.'

In this country, and increasingly around the world I'd guess, artists are not supported by the state as a necessary and healthy part of cultural evolution - and if they were, would a state-sanctioned "sugar daddy" be preferable to a private one? Even artists whose work is supported by The National Endowment of The Arts have to shy away from controversial subject matter that might endanger their grant money - lest they once again starve for their vision. At least with private money there's no room for political pressure.

As you stated, great art has always been supported by wealthy patrons, who have both the money to support the artist and (some of whom) take the time to research and discover new talent. The free market system has produced what you hear on the radio and see in advertising - which rarely contributes to new ideas and often becomes self-referential, homogenized tripe. Popular Art isn't always the best art - it's just the most consumed; Just like McDonalds may be the most popular restaurant according to the numbers, but would anyone say it's the best?

Unfortunately, "exclusion" seems to be an innate drive for human beings.

  • From the homeless man whose found an abandoned home to crash in and sneers at those rascals who are still sleeping in boxes to...
  • those who live in the old section of the trailer park and those who live in the "new section" of the trailer park to...
  • Catholics and Protestents to....
  • Jews and Muslims to...
  • Mods and Rockers to...
  • Whites and Blacks to...
  • Blacks and other "Shades of Black" to. . .
  • "members" of exclusive country clubs who sneer at "non-members."

It just so happens the last example is the most conspicuous and makes me feel bad because, even if I had the money and the attire to gain entrance to the Bloomfield Hills Country Club, I'd be stopped from seeing Grace perform her art on that particular night because I'm not "good enough" in the eyes of successful capitalists.

And they'd be right. I'm a lousy capitalist. Who in their right mind would bother so much with local independent music and never bother to profit from it? I must be crazy, because not only do I not profit from it - I'm losing money and time in the process! The Fool!!!

"Be off with you, Market Retard! Come back when you've made your first ten million - when you've proven yourself worthy of our company."

At least you married a bass-player...See, therei it is again.
