DETROIT (Dec. 10, 2002) - SPIN magazine's "Year in 2002" January issue selected Detroit artists for three of its top five annual music honors - and the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau isn't a bit surprised.

Hitting newsstands this week, SPIN's January 2003 issue selected Eminem as the artist of the year, the White Stripes' "White Blood Cells" as album of the year, and Eminem's "Cleanin' Out My Closet" as single of the year. Both Eminem and the White Stripes are based in Detroit.

"The buzz is getting out there about the diversity and talent of Detroit's music scene," said Larry Alexander, president of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau. "We not only originated Motown and Techno music, but we have contributed some of the world's best jazz, blues and rock artists."

In 2003, the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau will be launching a publicity campaign to promote Detroit's lively music and art scene, which has come to the forefront recently with Detroit-based movies like "Eight Mile" and "Standing in the Shadows of Motown," as well as with popular Detroit music artists like Eminem, Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker and the White Stripes.

"We receive thousands of visitors every year just to hear the sounds coming from Detroit," said Alexander. "And we continue to host some of the best free music concerts of any kind that attract travelers from all over the globe. "
