What better time to target unsuspecting bar patrons for free music than in the midst of the holiday mall rush? That's right, once again we've committed Random Acts of Music on your behalf in an effort to spread the gospel of local music. This time we gave away music from The Wrenfields and The Grins. Now let's see who our latest vicitms are.

Steve & Becky Ayling were further away from home than I was at The Hayloft in Mt. Clemens. I think they were there to cheer on some locals, so I rewarded them with some free music from The Wrenfields and gave them my whole spiel about local music; how it's much better to find music you like locally because you can see and meet the bands in the intimate atmosphere of a club rather than spending $50 or more per ticket, $8 per watered-down beer, and a pair of crappy seats a quarter-mile from the stage. I got myself all worked up talking about it and Steve and Becky politely tolerated and thanked me. I think they got the point.

Hey, why not get your free CD signed by The Wrenfields themselves at their CD Release Party at Memphis Smoke in Royal Oak on Friday, Dec 6th? Trust me, you can't do that at The Palace and you'll enjoy it so much more. Enjoy the music.

Sure, Julie Stackpoole is the sister of Kilkenny drummer Dan Stackpoole, but I don't think that should protect her from a Random Act of Music. Julie owns a computer networking company, the details of which have been permanently removed from my short-term memory by a haze of Tanqueray and cranberry juice (sorry).

But not only is Julie a local music fan by birth, she used to sing torch songs in Chicago jazz clubs and she's been after her brother lately to let her sit in. That reminded me of another sister (our own "miscommunicate") of another local bandhead who, when she finally got her chance, created the gem "Tolerance" on the Grin's "Coffee Grounds" CD. Who knows, Julie, maybe you'll soon grace us with your vocal talents on disc. Thanks for being such a gracious host and letting me smoke vicariously through you. Man, I needed that.
