cherri writes Manistee, MI:
Blues rule breakers
Cherri & the Violators will be rocking the First Street Beach Douglas Park fireworks party on July 4th, 2004, climaxing the Manistee Forest Festival. Music will commence at 8 PM, break for the fireworks show, and resume afterwards, until the beer tent closes and the authorities tell everyone to pack up and go home.
The July 4 show is one of only two summer appearances in Manistee for Cherri & the Violators. “We’re booked all over the state this summer,” says band leader Cheryl Bendig, “It’s a pleasure to play our home town. We played our first gig as a band in Manistee in 2001. The community has always supported us as we’ve grown as musicians and showmen.” Cherri & the Violators will entertain at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Manistee on July 23.
July 17th the band heads off to St. Joseph for the three-day Venetian Festival. The band appears on the River Stage at 7 PM. Other bands scheduled to appear at the Venetian Festival include
Blue Oyster Cult, Foreigner, Three Dog Night, and Better Than
Ezra. Violator’s summer appearances include the Dunegrass Music Festival in Empire, the East Tawas Blues by the Bay Festival, and RS Underground in West Olive. A complete gig schedule is available at the band’s website,

Fans from Grand Rapids rented tour busses to come to Lansing.”
One reason for the Violators rising popularity is the airplay their CD,
First Offense, is receiving on WGVU (Grand Rapids), WCMU (Alpena), WMOM (Ludington) and WWKR (Ludington). WGVU plays “The Weekend Song” every Friday night during rush hour, as well as other cuts. Friday June 25, the station aired a block of four CNV tunes in a row.
Cheryl, on vocals, rhythm guitar, sax, and Paul Bendig, on vocals and bass, founded the band in 2000. Stand out guitarist Tony Burke joined in 2002. Drummer Pat Eickenroth of Traverse City was hired shortly after the release of First Offense. The Violator’s original drummer, Johnny Schweitzer, is featured on the CD.
Blues columnist Mark Smith writes of First Offense:
“This hard rocking release by northern Michigan based Cherri and the Violators recalls the glory days of blues rock as practiced by the likes of Foghat or more recently Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers. Like those bands the Violators rock hard but have a bluesy edge that keeps blues fans interested. Leading the sonic assault is guitarist Tony Burke who clearly spent as many hours soaking up classic 70's rock riffs as he spent with the bedrock blues of Albert Collins, Albert King and Buddy Guy. Equally adept at scorching leads as he is with rocking fills, Burke will have jaws dropping every time this disc finds its way into the cd changer. While Burke's guitar is certainly a focal point you can't overlook the vocals of Cherri Bendig who recalls everyone from Lou Ann Barton to Janis Joplin with the ferocious power of her voice. She is always just right for the rocking material. Bendig is also a fearless songwriter with topics covering everything from the monthly bouts that send men into hiding, PMS Blues, to her grudging admiration of a woman who manages to be the center of attention despite being "a cold hearted ball breaking bitch", Ice Queen, to her stern warning to a potentially wandering mate, Can't Have Two, to her homage to the hard partying weekend warriors, The Weekend Song. Those that like their blues served on the rocks will find much to like
here.”
The July 4th Fireworks show is sponsored by the Manistee Chamber of Commerce and the Manistee Forest Festival. There is no admission cost for this event.
