Mitch writes Torque, that beast of a wrench-head I work with, was just telling me yesterday that out of his original circle of yoopers, he's the only one who still listens to rock and roll. The rest of the wild bunch listen almost exclusively to country music now. He qualified that confession by calling it "country rock", the way southerners qualify all flavors of soda with "Coke"; cherry coke,
orange coke, lemon coke, etc... Click "Read More" below.Tastes in music change as we grow older or just plain tired of what we cut our teeth on. The cyclical nature of the music business too has great influence in what many people decide to feed their ears. Out with the old, in with the new, sick of the new, back to the old. It's a monotonously predictable, perpetual change machine.
But there are certain artists in every genre who seem to transcend the vacillating nature of popular tastes. And their hardcore fans, true to their hardcore nature, are never shaken by popular trends. In fact, you'll usually find their devotion tatooed somewhere on their body.
Whitey Morgan and the Waycross Georgia Farmboys are just such a congregation of true believers. Though their emergence coincides with a resurgent interest in "gen-U-ine" country music, these "fellers" are dedicated to playing the music of their heroes Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard - regardless of what band they're
pickin' for.
Salvaged from the scrap yard of the local music scene, Whitey Morgan and The Waycross Georgia Farmboys is composed of spare parts from South Normal (Jeremy MacKinder), Dixie Hustler (Eric Allen a.k.a "Whitey Morgan") and the recently defunct Long Black Sedan (Jack Schneider & Dylan Dunbar). They're welded together by their devotion to authentic country music, the kind their moms and pops listened to while they drank green Kool Aid and vodka on the back porch from gallon milk jugs.
If you're a rock fan whose country-curious, check out the sound samples on their website. Then if you're sold,
sneak out to The New Way bar on May 20th and treat yourself to a guilty pleasure. For classic country fans, it's a no-brainer. This bunch can deliver what you need until this whole pop-country thing fades away. - Mitch
