 The blurb-bucket is overflowing so I finally had to buckle down and get some news out there. Leading this month, unfortunately, is the death of Bulletproof Moxie guitarist Chad Goklani which we are really sad to hear about. Our thoughts go out to his band mates, friends and family in their time of sorrow. Man, I just saw Bulletproof Moxie a few months back at Small's with Radar Pilot. They had a tight, energetic set as I recall (I'm listening to the two-song disc I picked up at the show as I type). You just never know when something like this is going to happen.
Anyway, we've also got news about National Ghost, Cherri & The Violators, the latest adventures of Chris & The Bogdon Box, Luke Sayers, a South Normal reunion, Mumble and Liz Larin. - Mitch

 Unfortunately, leading the news this month is the reported death of Bulletproof Moxie and former Blind Shame guitarist Chad Goklani. According to an e-mail we received from the band, he was killed in an accident on Monday, January 7th 2008. Comments posted by a friend on the EMUtalk.org website that same night say the accident involved a train and comments on the GnRevolution forum connect the death to a story that appeared in the Detroit Free Press also on January 7th. That story, by Free Press staff reporter Bill Laitner ("Ferndale man steps in front of train, dies in apparent suicide", Detroit Free Press, January 7, 2008) reports the incident took place at 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of 9 Mile and Hilton, possibly as the result of a chronic, painful medical condition. The band will be holding a tribute concert for Chad Goklani at The RItz in Warren on Saturday, February 2nd. $5 at door - All proceeds to benefit the family.  National Ghost have celebrated their second year together (has it already been that long?) having successfully completed only their third official show. But they managed to pass the audition - at least as far as the first round of Emergenza is concerned (though for the life of me I can't find them on the massive B.O.B that is the Emergenza website). The boys, including former Robb Roy singer Graham Strachan, reportedly wowed the crowd at Small's in Hamtown and are moving onto the second phase which is scheduled to take place at The Magic Bag sometime in April. Eventually, providing their continued success, National Ghost could emerge in Copenhagen, Germany somewhere down the road. Details to follow at MySpace/NationalGhost.
 Our favorite calendar posters, Cherri & The Violators have hired a new guitar player and have expanded their contemporary blues format to include thirty new songs including classic and contemporary rock. After a month of auditions, Herb “The Battery” Cottier was officially added to the CNV lineup just in time for the 2008 update. Herb's got 20 yrs of experience under his belt, his most recent stint running with Northern Michigan's Duke and the Studebakers.  Chris Badynee (Bazooka Jones) is still making the rounds with his Bogdon Cardboard Box Bass, which most recently appeared in an article in Bass Player Magazine in the January 2008 edition. Chris sent an e-mail from the Winter NAMM show in Anaheim California and hopes to attend the Spring NAMM show in Nahsville come June. He promises to send us some new pictures, but in the meantime, he's trying to land a spot on one of the late-night talk shows. Keep your fingers crossed. I'm betting on Conan (ya think?).  Folk troubadours Luke Sayers & The Last To Know have just finished working on their first full-length release, entitled "Radio Flower", with Steve Goers, Steve Caldwell and Ben Frank at The Lake Studio. Mixing will begin post-haste. The disc will reportedly include fan favorites “What I Should've Said”, “Busy Signal”, and their cover of Johnny Cash's “Worried Man”. Jill Jack and Pat Shanley make cameos on "Bitter Wine". Sayers is offering loyal fans a spot on the credits of his new disc and a credit on a "special page" of his website for a $15 pre-order of the disc, which will help defray recording costs.  South Normal have announced they will re-unite for one very special show, the 4th Annual "Just Let Me Breathe" Cystic Fibrosis benefit which will take place March 15th at The Royal Oak Music Theatre (ed-mark your calendars!) Also appearing so far: Hellen, Rose Harting and Bull Halsey. I hurd it through the MySpace that Whitey Morgan & The Waycross Georgia Farmboys might mosey on over for a spell too! You never know who might show up to support this very worthy cause. Add it to your MySpace Calendar while you're thinking about it.
 Mumble seems to have found their niche with a new single called "In It Now" which guitarist Eric Empson says will be the first track on their upcoming record. Think Mathew Sweet meets The Lettermen - not a mix I've heard before. For the purposes of keeping up on our local band history, Mumble currently consists of: John Hawthorne: lead vocals, rhythm & acoustic guitars; Eric Empson: harmony & backing vocals, lead & rhythm guitars; Rick Camburn: harmony & backing vocals, bass guitar and Landon Ewers on drums.  Former Atlantic recording artist and home-girl Liz Larin might have set a new record with her triple CD release party at Goodnite Gracie's in Royal Oak on Wed, January 23rd 2008. Larin has been threatening a deluge of new material since I saw her scribbling lyrics on a popcorn bucket at the Crowded House show back in August (no joke). She performed material from all three of her alter-egos: 'Stella 13-When Soul Becomes Symphony', 'Luster Kraft-Transmitter' and her new CD 'Liz Larin-Blue Circus Life.' Liz also appeared on Fox2's morning show on January 21st and performed "Bolero (Sloppy Kisser)" from Blue Circus Life. The music of Stella 13 is now available on LizLarin.com - with a "So Such Thing As Goodbye" as a freebie for a limited time.
