A group of Internet Radio Stations have banded together to protect their ability to broadcast independent music online without going broke due to artificial economic barriers created by R.I.A.A. and their friends in corporate radio. I'd like to share with you a few reasons why I think we all need to support the The Webcaster Alliance and their fight against the R.I.A.A. Your access to a wider market in the future as an independent artist is at stake. Click "Read More" below.
Why You Should Support The Webcasters Alliance
1: A lot of Internet Stations play music by Unsigned Artists:
Without Internet Radio, it is one less place to try to find new outlets for your music; and less new places to find music ignored by the mainstream.
2: It will be harder to start you own Internet Station:
How many of us have wanted to start our station. Hey get a Decent Computer and A Fast Net connection and you can beam your favorite tunes around the globe. Does it not help any artist you promote? I am not sure someone with 10 listeners on a Lo-Fi Stream is going to make a major profit out of there spare bedroom. They may make 10 or 20 new friends from half way around the world, or someone half way down the block. Seeing how you can’t save streams, is there really a threat of someone copying the music?
3: What better way to prove that a local is as good as a major then playing their music side by side?
Ahh, this may be the real reason to block Internet radio. Record labels want to control what you hear. What better way to prove your Local Band is on par with a Major? What better way to prove You are just a Good a DJ as the Jet-Setter flying in from Europe? Play Your song side by side with the current top cuts. Play Your mix one hour and a superstar DJ Hit Mix the next. Side-by-Side comparisons may open a few eyes to Local Talent. The R.I.A.A. does not want that, now do they?
4: Want to promote your favorite regional act coming to town in a Rented Van?
Play their stuff on the local Internet stations. The F.C.C. and R.I.A.A. make it nearly impossible for Micro FM Transmitters to exist because of the Minimum Power Requirements they have put in place, but an Internet Station does not interfere with FM does it? So why do they go after the Internet Stations? Control!!!
It seems to me the R.I.A.A. would want Internet Radio to help promote the Acts they have not been able to get on Mainstream Stations. But they are more afraid of being displaced as the necessary evil for unknown artist to get their music heard.
So what should we do?

We Vote with our Dollars, and we need to send our dollars and our prayers to help keep the latest indie channels alive.
We all need to support the The Webcaster Alliance and their fight against the R.I.A.A.

This again is one reason why I don't buy nationaly released CD's or go to national live acts anymore. There's plenty of great music around here. Why would we need anything that the corporate pukes says is good for us. |

The RIAA is just a simple industry shrew for the major music software companies. Then there’s NPR’s home office: They had a major hand in making it tougher for micro-power radio stations to come online. And they’re having trouble figuring out that they need to help out their local affiliate stations with some of that $200 million that Ray Kroc’s wife just gave to them (the affiliate stations are having a difficult time financially).
So where does this leave the independent artist? In need of Web based indy radio and college radio. I know we’ll be supporting both.
