Happy New Year to all who've joined us on Michiganbands.com in 2002 and those of you who are new to us in 2003. You are now part of a musical family of over 810 registered users, including musicians, promoters, club-owners and most importantly - independent music fans! We've had a growth spurt in the January of 2003 and have achieved nearly 97,000 hits this month! We're cookin' now. Click "Read More" for site details, plans and news.
Thanks all around
I'd personally like to thank our sponsors, namely Riverside Drive, The Kingsnakes, Hydrophonic, The Grins, 83rd Dream, Blue Tail Fly, Radiocraft, and Jill Jack. Your advertisements have made it possible for the site to continue it's mission to promote independent music in Michigan. I'd also like to thank anyone who has purchased sheet music from Music Notes or books from Amazon.com through our site. Every dime we get goes right back into site improvements, software, a pillow for my expanding butt and a divorce lawyers for both Webmaster Rick and I (too much time on the computers). Just kidding, we can't afford lawyers!
I'd also like to thank the MB members who have gone out of their way to submit articles, especially wwghost, Kat, ponygrrl, hippiechic and wiki who's submissions were not just a press release for their own bands. Oh, and I'd like to thank Broadzilla, TKSgroupie, Nicotine and Othello98, for some great forum posts - you've really kept things humming along for all of us. Did you see the "ridiculous band names" post? "The Piss Clams" - that is priceless.
Again, to all of you who submitted content (and if I missed you I'm truly sorry), your selfless acts of music are setting the tone for a scene that will be the envy of the world. Is that over-stating things? Good. Fake it till you make it - that's what I say.
Plans & Progress
As you can see from our latest survey, promoting your music to the general public and adding music samples to our site are your two biggest priorities - so that's where we're putting our energy, and the few bucks we've made from advertisements. Next month we'll be purchasing an additional 400 megabytes of storage space to add your music samples to Michiganbands.com. Webmaster Rick will be working on the interface for most of next month, so please be patient.
As for promoting to the general public, I'll be doing some more Random Acts of Music hopefully soon and we'll also begin regular CD giveaways for music fans - which will probably take the real estate at the top of the Home page. Forums will no longer be on the front page but we'll be sure to put a prominent link in the main menu.
Reviews
Speaking of patience, those of you waiting for reviews, specifically, Tangent, Almost Famous, and The Process, - you haven't been forgotten. It's just hard to find the time to write between calendar posts, submission posts, classified posts, and the dozen or so e-mails I get every day. But read my lips, they will be reviewed (no new taxes, right?). Seriously, I wouldn't say it if it weren't going to happen.
To those of you who are interested in doing reviews, click the "Random Bands" link on the right hand side of the home page, review a few of our listed bands' by visiting their website and listening to their music. Then use the "submit news" function (registered users only) to send us your your review (I would suggest writing it on your word-processor program first, then cutting and pasting to our submission form. I can't tell you how many good articles I've lost by typing directly to the form). Don't worry, I'll take care of the artwork and editing (ya'll already help me with the copy-editing).
Once I know you're serious about volunteering, I'll give you an actual CD's to review that you can keep. But not until then; I've been burned by pretenders who never came through with the goods once they got the CD. I may not believe what you say, but no one can deny what you do.
Advertising Policies
Now that we're getting the traffic, promoters, studios, clubs and labels are popping up in the calendar posts, the forums and the classified ads. I'd like to ask that you remind them that these features are free to BANDS ONLY. I would encourage anyone with a for-profit music service, promotions company or venue to purchase a display ad. There is, however, an option to purchasing a display ad - submitting original content (that means you didn't copy or plagiarise it) in the form of an article on anything music related. I would prefer it be something you're knowledgeable about, even if it's just your opinion. If I think it's a genuine effort on your part to entertain or inform our readers, you can plug your business or include a display ad in the article body (just send me the artwork).
Members, if you see a shameless plug in our forums from a music service or venue , please encourage them to buy a display ad, submit content, or otherwise support Michigan Bands instead of trying to get a freebie ad at your expense. If that doesn't work, e-mail the editor and he'll take care of it asap.
Servers etc...
As you may have noticed at certain points this month, our server can get sluggish during peak hours or shut down completely. Some of these problems we can control by moving to a new server that doesn't cater to monster sites that eat up all the bandwidth. We plan to do this soon and webmaster Rick, hopefully, will keep us informed. But some problems we can't control (worms and other pesky virtual critters who clog up the server's works and shut 'em down). There's been a glut of internet problems this January and one can only speculate as to the cause (terrorism?). But if you come for a visit and we're not responding, chock it up to Murphy's Law of Mechanics - the more complicated a machine, the more it will break down.
Enough of my blathering, onward and upward! Registered users, feel free to comment below
- Mitch
